Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is an older desktop version available

I now have an early version of Alpha Anywhere ver 12.3 build 2446 that I have been using for quite some time. I have not built any applications for probably 5 years or more. My question is I have an organization that I built an app for many many years ago (probably 20 years ago) and the organizations computer crashed (no backup what so ever). I have the original app on my computer and I "think" it works on my Alpha Anywhere (although I am unable to access the old scripts that work to operate much of the app.). What options does the organization have in order to use this app. A desktop based approach is all they need. They originally had a full blown version (don't know how old) but was wondering about a runtime version of Alpha Anywhere. OR is an older version available for download that they can use? I am assuming the new computer will probably have Windows 11. Any help would be much appreciated.

Something else you may want to try.
Depending upon the PC crash type, take the discs out and buy, beg, borrow a"Disc Cradle" about $15 to buy.
The cradle plugs into a USB port on your machine and you can use it like a pen drive or NAS.
      The disks just slot in.
Then you may be able to access the Alpha application in its entirety.

Assuming you have access to your organization's computer, I recommend you have them obtain a license from Alpha for the full developer's version. I would download version 4119 to your organization's computer to enable you to fix whatever may be wrong with their application. We have found that later versions of Alpha have not been reliable for our desktop applications. However, the newest stable version, 8973, does appear to be better, and we are testing that now.

If the application on your computer works, then you could copy all non-data files in the application on your computer to your user organization's computer. Non-data files are those which don't end in .dbf or .cdx. If you can get their version going in version 4119, then you might try running it in 8973.

            Hi,
I believe we need a bit of filling in blanks, please. Was this written with Alpha 5? It is quite unclear whether the company Alpha application files (adb, alb, alm, alx, muf, dbf, ddd, ddm, cdx, fpt) are intact and usable and the question relates to being able to get these files to run with a recent Alpha program and how to make that happen, or is it the application files are not intact, and the question being what can be done to recover an Alpha application with old and bad Alpha application files?

1- "I have an organization that I built an app for many many years ago (probably 20 years ago) and the organizations computer crashed (no backup what so ever)."
This goes to what Ted wrote. When the computer "crashed", is this the motherboard or the hard drive? Is the hard drive intact because if so, then what Ted wrote is spot on.

2- "I have the original app on my computer and I "think" it works on my Alpha Anywhere (although I am unable to access the old scripts that work to operate much of the app.). "
Is it that you not being able to access the old scripts because what you have is an early version of the app and not an up-to-date version (the app when crashed is a more highly developed app than the "original app" on your computer)?

3- What options does the organization have in order to use this app.
Again, is there a viable app to be run? If so, how big is this app(in MB or GB)?

4- "They originally had a full blown version (don't know how old) but was wondering about a runtime version of Alpha Anywhere"
I would try as Ted suggested that the app, if viable, be examined in an earlier version like v10, or v11 to see what the condition is, before you start venturing into v12

5- OR is an older version available for download that they can use? I am assuming the new computer will probably have Windows 11.
Don't know about older versions operating in Win11. There might be someone willing to sell an older version which would have to come with a license and a license key.

Answer these and you will likely be helped in baby steps.
            Mike W
