Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5_is_email_valid

I have a logical field in a table (DBF) which is calculated using A5_IS_EMAIL_VALID(EMAIL-ADDRESS) this works perfectly on windows 10 but throws an error to the trace window when run on Windows 11 - any ideas please.

The function is pretty simple and is not doing anything OS-specific or using any Windows APIs. What is the exact error?

Hi Lenny - long time no speak.

Thats exactly what I thought but the facts are the field is a logical field and its content is calculated using the formula A5_IS_EMAIL_VALID(Email_Address)
All works fine on my Windows 10 machine but when i access the relevant table on windows 11 I get an error message telling me to look at the trace window and the entry in the error tab is

Warning [1]: Error(s) opening rules for field: EMAILVALID
Warning [2]: Error adding calculated rule to database engine.

If I remove the field rule all is ok

I have tried compacting the database.

      Many thanks for your attention
      Bob

        Hi Bob.
Have you tried recreating the field rule from scratch?

Hi Ted - yes I have tried that including powering off and on again between removing it and recreating it.
Strangely if i try the function in the Interactive window it works as it should.
I have also tried applying it as a field rule on a different logical field in the table and then went on to try and use it in a different table.
I wondered if having the field named email_address was perhaps the problem so created a completely new table with different field names but the issue persists.
Just stumbled upon an anomaly that might point to a corrupt AA installation - when I click the About Alpha Anywhere button to check the version number nothing happens so I guess the next step is to try re-installing AA
          Will keep you posted.

I imagined you would have done that as you have few gey Alpha Hairs.
Have you tried running Alpha as ADMIN?
Shouldn't have to, but just a suggestion.

UPDATE !! I finally got to update the version of AA on my laptop using the Update installer rather than an old .exe I had lying around which seemed to upset Norton as most things do. Anyway the function now works again and I'm a happy if slightly baffled bunny. Thanks Ted and Lenny for your input.

Glad you got it working Bob.
I just got back from shopping and tried it out and it worked fine.
You haven't got the install in the Prog Files folder have you? (I doubt it given your knowledge, but I sometimes forget my name when the Old Bill stop me!)

Thanks Ted, as you surmised whilst I have forgotten all I have learned that mistake isn’t one of them. Curious to know how many times you get stopped by the Old Bill and more interestingly why ????
