Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I think the links refer to the latest versions already. That is if i read the (revised) release notes right.

Edit later: NO. exe files are still the same.

release notes mention possibility to use language placeholders now in the tabbed UI...

I have a suggestion: Why not automatically place the a5r tags to all labels by alpha automatically as a default, so we do not have to perform the tedious task when we want to use different languages?

      regards, Ron

about the language issue and using ...
It is not working as it should using Greek ? Looks ok when using latin characters - but not with Greek characters - results in ?????????? characters ??
Does this affect other languages as well. Anybody else having the same experience?
I will try to upload a video demonstrating this.

Great Idea I back that up, it could add the tags and define a language called "default Language" automatically or something like that.
Right now is just a pain in the a..

Re: Release Candidate for Next Update

It appears that these patches have broken my ability to view active link tables. The same connection to Northwind (Access) that I was created last week and used in Reports in the class will not open (in Desktop control panel). Passive link tables open fine and connections to same table used in grids are working fine. The error I get is: "Error loading c:\...\products.dbf: Function not recognized". Also same error experiences with Active Link table connected to MS SQL.

I installed the patches on top of the current release that I downloaded last week. Is that correct or should these patches be installed on a beta version. My search for "Beta Release" did not lead me to the answer.

              Thanks.

We are aware of this. The real update, to be released tomorrow, does not have this issue.

Re: Release Candidate for Next Update

I have done the following, and much, too much, more to remedy this problem. See my posts over the last few days.

I just went through this procedure, as directed, yet again with no success.

"PDF Printing Fails - CDINTF~1. "DriverInitFailed" Message - Some users have reported this error when trying to print a PDF report:
                CDINTF~1. "DriverInitFailed"
The reason that you would get this error is if the AlphaFiveV4 printer (i.e. the Amyuni Printer driver) is no longer installed, or correctly installed. To solve the problem:
Go to the Printers folder and delete the 'AlphaFiveV4' printer
                Re-install the Application Server
                Re-apply the latest update"

How about if you guys at Alpha Five step in and see what you can do to finally resolve this.

Re: Release Candidate for Next Update

Please report your bug through the Help|Send a Bug Report menu item in the A5 IDE. Include everything we need to replicate your problem; if we can reproduce it, we can fix it.

All the A5 developers see these reports. They don't all comb the vast wasteland of the message board.

I think "vast wasteland" is not only a bit strong, but in fact, you are strongly insulting what is probably one of Alpha's best selling feature; an active, helpful group of Alpha Five developers not on Alpha Software's payroll, with real world, practical experience, answering a multitude of support questions.

And actually, Alpha Employees could learn a thing or two by perusing this "vast wasteland" even more. There are many issues brought up that are not just bugs, but are concepts, issues, techniques, difficulties many have, wishlist items, documentation misunderstandings, etc. that I would consider a goldmine of information for Alpha Software to act on to make the product even better for non-programmers and programmers alike.

I can't argue with you, Ira. You're right. The peer community here is very valuable.

However, after being on the other side of the fence for a month, I understand the developers' frustration with incomplete and scattered reports on the board. There's another mechanism to bring reproducible issues to their attention, and they expect people to use it.

So when someone complains bitterly "How about if you guys at Alpha Five step in and see what you can do to finally resolve this," I have to say "Why don't you send in a usable bug report so that we can?"

Half of Alpha's problem in getting a usable bug report is they don't have a useful bug report generator.

My Alpha Five add-on utilities DO, reporting back a COMPLETE picture of the OS, hardware & A5 environment as well as having a place for text.

You can not always depend on users to give an accurate list of the environment they are running in. They can't even always generate an accurate report of what they are seeing within A5, nor understand what their application is doing.

There should also be categories of "bug" reports, e.g.
                            • Bug Type - Desktop, WAS, Bug, Cosmetic, Feature request, Docmentation error, Documentation clarification etc.
                            • Impact level - Major (everyone thinks their bug is major though!), Minor, cosmetic, odd handling of a specific case etc.
                            • Failure frequency - Repeatable, Intermittent, Rare/Occasional
Even better, would be a web site where a user could log the bug info in, check on the status of the bugs they submitted and even update the info as they obtain more info on the nature of the submitted bug. But that's effectively how the message board operates now.

Also, impact shouldn't be measured by the loudness of the squeaky wheel (or bad accelerator pedal!), but by the the number of affected users (direct and indirect) and the severity of the issue.

E.g. Cal Locklin's and my addon utilities have 100's of users even though we are only 2 people directly impacted. There are problems we reported back with a5v9 (May 2008) with complete info, that, while even though we were the only 2 directly affected, it affected all of our users (which are all a5 developers), and potentially some others that use certain features of A5. We each have resolved the issue to making it operate for V9 and up, but are both absolutely sure Alpha is doing things (and still doing the same way in V10) in ways that are non-compatible to Windows 7 and Vista methods.

                            My 2 cents.

Added: Also, a bug report generator could optionally zip up an entire database and send it, or a database with just the structure, dictionaries and no data (much data is sensitive and shouldn't be exported out of locations) and attach the zip file and save the user the hassle/issue of doing it.

Re: Release Candidate for Next Update

Perhaps this may be illuminating, Martin. I am not a developer. I don't know jack about code. I bought A5 so that I could build the database system that I need even with my handicaps.

I have perused this "vast wasteland" for hours and days upon end and one of the things I noted was the criticism of not using the bug reports properly or insufficiently setting up a re-creatable scenario. I have no clue why this is happening in my program. I have even less clue as to how to submit a bug that will allow you to recreate the problem.

I have spent nearly an hour now trying to figure out elemental things just to respond to A5s request for a bug report that resulted from my posting to the Selwyn Robins thread.

And now it's "Let them eat cake"?

This morning I lost a long sought presentation to a much needed customer because I could not produce these reports. In my business, you don't get second chances at these people.

So, "bitter"? You have no idea. Now, I'm just venting, but, it helped more than anything else I've done in the last hundred hours.

@willobeth I'm sorry you are encountering problems, and I'm sorry about your lost sale. Nevertheless, your venting doesn't help us fix the problem, even if it does make you feel better. Do your best to generate an error report, tell us what you did and what you saw, and then we'll ask you for the additional information we think might be relevant. When Selwyn gave you instructions he assumed that you had the same problem he had just fixed.

@csda1 All good points, Ira. We have been reexamining our version rollout and bug reporting procedures internally. We'll have to see about the direction we take them. I hope that we can calm things down so that fewer bugs make it through testing into production builds, but the cost of that will be fewer production releases.

                                @frankbicknell ;)
