Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dropdown Selection Search

    I saw a couple of months ago a video that showed how you could set a search part of a grid to execute the search just after a selection was made in a dropdown box without having to pres the search button, but I cant find it now

    can some one point me to where the video is or just point me out how this is done
    Cheers

    Re: Dropdown Selection Search

    You can auto submit on a quick search.

    You can also use auto-submit on cascading look ups in the search part of a grid, and the search will fire on selecting the second (and all subsequent) piece of the cascade (assuming you turn on auto-submit in the cascade definition).

          Re: Dropdown Selection Search

          Mauricio,

          If you use a single search field which is a DropDown it is possible to use the Javascript OnChange event for the field to initiate the search once the selection has been made from the DropDown.

          Insert the following code in the Inline-Javascript Action

          Code:
          {grid.Object}.submitSearchForm();
          I have only done some simple tests with a dbf table so hope it works in your case.

          David.

            Thank you, David. I was trying to find a way to use the onChange js event last night, but couldn't find it. (too tired)

            I need to study those Grid methods a bit more.

                Im trying to show a wait dialog while the search is running but it sends me an error

                Code:
                A5.msgBox.show('Wait...','<div style=\'padding: 20px;\'>Please Wait</div>','none',function() {});
                {grid.Object}.submitSearchForm();
                A5.msgBox.hide();
                What am I doing wrong?

                BTW is there a way to not show the search button
                Cheers

                    Frank,

                    In Search Properties change the Toolbar position to None

                      Mauricio,

                      Place your message code in Javascript Events in Grid Properties

                      In the canSearchSubmit event put this code

                      Code:
                      A5.msgBox.show('Wait...','<div style=\'padding: 20px;\'>Please Wait</div>','none',function() {});
                      In the afterSearchSubmit event put this code

                      Code:
                      A5.msgBox.hide();
                      Seems to work OK.

                      David.

                          Thanks to David. This very old post also solved my new problem!

                          However, I wish the Alpha5 development team would incorporate that 'auto-submit' option for non-cascading dropdown as well, in their new version.
                          Solving the problem this way is more fun and I learned more though.
