Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

1PM CT is correct, but its easy to get thrown by Daylight versus Standard time. We did not record because there were bandwidth and technical problems even without recording. I had notes that detail the process - I will now clean those up and run them through Alpha's normal Blog outlet.

We did establish that others are interested in forming a SIG (Special Interest Group) where developers can routinely discuss deep technical issues like this. I will put that together through IADN.

I also determined that a webinar with a large audience is best suited for one-way PowerPoint presentations rather than attempting to be interactive with multiple applications running.

I also got stuck in a meeting and was unable to get away in time to catch the presentation. Anyone record it locally on their own computer?

Currently going through the process of migrating from an integrated Access/Alpha hybrid to MSSQL Server 2008. Steep learning curve and any insights are appreciated.

Steve, thanks for all of your support in the forums!

I'm creating a video cover the details. The webinar was frought with technical issues, bandwidth problems, and a nice clean video will be a good replacement.

Chad, how could you forget a name like "Happy Fish Database Designer". Although they just changed the name to "ERD Concepts 5", can't imagine why. I reviewed a bunch before buying this one, relatively inexpensive, $240USD. Only complaint is it has poor support for drawing tools, like if you wanted to draw an arrow somewhere on the page. It has reverse engineering so you can take an Access db, chart it, then save as sql server. Besides the visual, these tools are valuable because they mandate that you build your tables and especially relationships correctly.

That's what I thought it was called but when I Googled happy fish I didn't exactly get what I was looking for.

                        Thanks again

                            Steven,

IS "ERD Concepts 5" similar to DB Designer/MySQL Workbench? It does reverse engineering, but it only supports DBF via ODBC and targets only MySQL. But, the cool thing about it is it's free.

Have you used it and do you have any opinion about how it compares?

                            Thanks

                              Steve

I am a bit late to this one but I've been told to research the effort to convert our A5V10.5 dbf Web Quickbooks timer to a SQL backend. Were any Videos or whitepaper created that discussed what techniques and issues you early adopters went through. The old posts discussed Active Link Tables --- I that the way you used.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you
