Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Which SQL database will you use?

I think A5 have strategically chosen wrong databases to support. I mean native 100% support, with localizations, triggers, autoincrements etc
First target should be GPL-licensed ones like Firebird, Postgresql, H2.
Next target should be MS Office file databases. But there is no need to develop, everything is developed by MS to support it
And only the last - cheap or free versions of commercial databases like Sybase SQL Anywhere, MS, Db2 express, Oracle.
Now we have a situation where Mysql becomes a tendency to leave it. But there is so much users, 50% who spent a lot of time on the development using no future database.
    That's what I think.

Mysql - free at least for now
with Navicat lite(free again) easy to manage and play with alpha five
size of the database only limited by disk space and memory.
working with php - many books written on this subject to help me.
      thanks for reading

Does it distinguishes mysql from other DBs?
Aren't there free stuff for postgres or firebird? or books?

Use whatever sql you want, Alpha covers probably 95% of the sql types.
I have Mysql and love it. Its free yes for now also remember everyone said that the free one would be killed off yet we have seen two major releases since Oracle got the rights to it.
Besides you dont have to upgrade I have the installation files for any new servers that I need.
And I doubt they can force me to uninstall it.

              Have you tested A5 with 95% sql-DBs?
I tested only with 4: SQL anywhere, H2, Firebird, Postgresql.

it works with SQL anywhere and postgresql with errors.
it doesn't work well with Firebird.
it doesn't work at all with H2.

So what you said is not true.

Steve Wood's original question: "What sql would YOU use in a new project. if you can explain..."
I am stating my view. I am not a professional programmer. I have no need to experiment with many DB systems.
Hobbyist like myself can use alpha five and mysql. and can express their opinion in this forum, I believe.

I'm your college in a way, as I am not a profy in it.
Just had to find out what I could use as an external DB of more or less serious level.
And expressed my findings here as well.

I don't think I should be a free tester since I purchased it.

Re: Which SQL database will you use?

Moderators are just a couple guys that have been around a while and offered, at one time or another, to help out Lenny (Alpha employee) manage posts, like when a section is retired or new members need to be approved, or to delete the very rare ultra-flame post. My Avatar is my real licence plate.

The point I was making is that most of us spend countless hours testing things that relate to Alpha Five, and IMO that it is not Alpha's responsibility to make their product work with whatever I come up with as my criteria. If all of us put together our list of what 3rd party resource we wanted Alpha to work with, and Alpha accepted that as their responsibly, there would be no Alpha Five.
