Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      You beloved Aussies imported it to New Zealand and I had a bite from one a year ago. They are very painful.

        Re: Creating an invoice in V10

        Hi,

        It's not very difficut to retrieve invoice with items through linked grid's from database, but the question is when you need to create new invoice, how to get invoice number to invoice lines and then save it to db.

        I'm now thinking about MSSQL triggers but.....

          Re: Creating an invoice in V10

          This thread keeps popping up but no one has updated it. I would have to say it would be a great tutorial for alpha to take on.

          I think of an invoice as a Quickbooks invoice or go back further to a hand written invoice or lets say order. Meaning purchase order, sales order or invoice.

          The user must be able to view the order in a browser window and it needs to look like a traditional doc. We all know it will be some combination of linked grids but exactly how to create this layout and the logic behind it is a little foggy.

          When you build an invoice in quickbooks it is autonomous. One button saves and updates all and it is viewed as a contiguous form.

                  Sales Order

                  I wonder if Alpha might follow through on this. Linking grids to demonstrate, how they can be combined to create a sales order.

                  The user must perceive the browser as if the sales order is one contiguous form, although it is actually a cascade of linked grids.

                  A picture paints a thousand words in this case it a few videos would save a thousand posts!

                  Bob
                  PS: I think what is really sought here is creating a sales order verses an invoice.

                    Invoice mockup

                    Attached is an image and zip file of a, more or less, functioning invoice mockup based upon Thomas Ritter's screenshot. I reverse engineered his image - along with a couple of tips from Thomas. My main stumbling block was the frame style set to modern, a setting I never noticed before. The mockup doesn't include the lookup fields, since this is not a functioning application. You can add them yourself and modify as needed. If you enter a new record, the child grid won't appear until you save the parent. And that just happens automatically - which is way cool. Because I didn't put in the lookups, you can't fill in the top fields which are just labels. Your lookup definition can take care of that. Similarly I cheated on the summary. I hard coded a 5% tax and a $12.00 fixed amount shipping charge. You can add code to retrieve field values etc to dynamically calc as needed. What I am missing - and haven't been able to figure out is, how Thomas manages to put the border around the summary section. Similarly he has the child grid border wrapped around the child grid - above the summary. Again, I have no idea how he managed that. I'm hoping that he will post his grids here soon. Otherwise, I hope this helps someone, because it sure helped me!

                    And thanks Thomas for the inspiration!

                    Note: Just noticed that the radio button "referral" is not showing as a radio. Don't know why???

                      Peter,

                      Add the following code (of course using your variables) to the OnSummarySectionRender Event. Also removing your total calculations will display the grid the way you want.

                      dim r as p
                      r.totalExtension = e.summaryValues.ExtendedPrice.Total
                      r.tax = .05 * r.totalExtension
                      r.orderTotal = r.totalExtension + r.tax

                      dim s as p
                      s.totalExtension = str(r.totalExtension,10,2,"$(")
                      s.tax = str(r.tax,10,2,"$(")
                      s.orderTotal = str(r.orderTotal,10,2,"$(")
                      e.summarySectionHTML = <<%html%
                      <style type="text/css">
                      table.total

                            Re: Creating an invoice in V10

                            Dear Peter,

                            I want to say a great big thank you for taking the time to explain to me how that invoice works.

                            I have been working with it this whole weekend designing my own Payment forms using the concepts I learned.

                            I am nowhere close to finish designing the invoice but have learned how to recreate what you have done and testing to see that it can work for my needs.

                            It works great for my needs.

                            Using what you have taught me with the forms and DIV's I am now able to include 2 subforms with the main form and have them render just like yours. It is way cool!!!

                            This is really slick and will really make a huge difference in a usable ok looking and working design and a really great/slick design. This was the break through I needed in designing this form and bringing it all together.

                            I will show it to you when I finally finish writing it.

                            So thanks once again and if there in any kind of information I can share with you, just give me a call or drop me an email!!

                              Thanks Tom, this code example will help me clean up some large chunks of code. I have a question though.

                              why this?
                              Code:
                              dim r as p
                              r.totalExtension = e.summaryValues.ExtendedPrice.Total

                              dim s as p
                              s.totalExtension = str(r.totalExtension,10,2,"$(")
                              instead of this.
                              Code:
                              dim s as p
                              s.totalExtension = str(e.summaryValues.ExtendedPrice.Total,10,2,"$(")
                              is that just style or is there a specific reason?

                              Very nice layout Peter. I especially like the hiding of the child grid.
                              I like your colors. I had created a style very similar to yours.
