Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What are you trying to accomplish here Claire? This function will send a POST request, but it does nothing with the response.

      Re: HTTP_POST used in afterinsertevent

When I call the code through the user defined function it calls a wsdl that has a set of java rules defined in them that then in turn updates the database in the background.

basically I am trying to build a front end to my backend rules and this is my attempt to integrate...

Thanks for the response I REALLY need any advice... still feel bit in the dark with A5 although I am really enjoying the speed that things can be done!

            HTTP_Post problem

            Hi there
I am still having a huge problem with my http_post
I have put the http_post into a xbasic user defined function
I am calling the user defined function from a grid component in the after insert event.
I have put a debug into my after insert event

            1. the http_post works when I call the user defined function interactivelly... I have a full log file
            2. the event is successfully calling the udf containing the http_post
            3. the http_post does not work (empty log file)

I have split the url in the http_post simply because of the length restrictions.

When I return the results from http_post I get "Cannot access the server running in this instance of Alpha Five." error code 66.
However as I say it is running in udf mode/if I just paste the url into the web browser... so is there a conflict somewhere with the application servers??

I really need any help you can give me!!!

              Re: HTTP_POST used in afterinsertevent

Claire, your problem seems to keep changing, or at least your description of it does. You need to simplify what you are doing, verify that a simple case works, then slowly build upon it until you either get to a working solution or identify what the cause of your problem is.

This latest error message indicates that you are trying to http_post() back to the same server itself, which you cannot do because of Xbasic limitations. But previously you said you were trying to http_post to a Sun server.

                Re: HTTP_POST used in afterinsertevent

                Thanks Lenny

I have tried to simplify it.
I have just run the test url that sends a hello world and that does not work.
I believe it is now a conflict in my sun application server and the alpha 5 application server even though the ports are different. I am running both in test mode on my laptop.

I am running in desktop mode for testing and everything works great. Sorry it changed just learnt bit and found out a bit as I went.

I am not sure what you mean by "This latest error message indicates that you are trying to http_post() back to the same server itself, which you cannot do because of Xbasic limitations"
I am running a sun application server that "hosts" my web app and trying to call it through my a5 screen.
Maybe the limitation you refer to above is the problem....

                thanks!

                  Re: HTTP_POST used in afterinsertevent

Alpha cannot perform an http_post() to itself in the same process. There should be no problem accessing a different process (e.g. your Sun server) on the same physical server though.

                    Re: HTTP_POST used in afterinsertevent

Lenny I am really sorry to bother you again with this but is there any way that there could be a conflict between the two servers.
It is definitely a different server (sun one) that I am posting to.

Are you sure there are no conflicts.

My ports are different ... I changed my port on the Alpha 5 side.

There is no other reason that there should be a problem.

                    Thanks

Claire, I have identified a recent change that I think has introduced the behavior you are seeing. I have corrected it and the fix will be available in the next update.
