Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Time Function problem

    I am trying to display a time field in a grid as h:m am

    I set up a calculated field:time = time("h:0m AM",In)
    based on an example for Xbasic for everyone

    time = time("h:0m AM",datetime)

    This is the grid from Xbasic:

    This is the problem 25102[/ATTA
    The error is Grid1_Gridobj is undefined

    Any ideas?

      Re: Time Function problem - A5 CS is this correct?

      I was trying to add/create a calculated for time display
      time("0h:0m am", In)

      The field is already a time format.

      I changed the display on the field properties; ( I did not see drop down list of pre-selected formats) and selected time("0h:0m am",<value>)

      A5 Customer Service is this correct?

        Re: Time Function problem

        Is your field's name time? If so I think you will have to change it because time is a reserved word. I am not sure of how to use calculated fields in the context in which yo are using it.

              Re: Time Function problem

              If you want to use a client-side calculated expression, so that users will see the result of the time calculation immediately (before submitting the record), then you need to use separate fields for hours, minutes and AM/PM. Don't use a time-type field. To my knowledge there is not a JavaScript-compatible function to extract the time from an Alpha Five time field.

              In this example:
              Out_h is a numeric field for the hours part of the time out.
              Out_m is a numeric field for the minutes part of the time out.
              Out_ampm is a character field containing AM or PM (JavaScript is case-sensitive so you should give your users a dropdown)
              Same as above for In_h, In_m, In_ampm

              Here is the client-side calculated expression:

              Out_h+(out_m/60)+if(Out_ampm="PM",12,0)-In_h-(in_m/60)-if(In_ampm="PM",12,0)

                Subject: Client side Calculated field - Javascript function declarations

                Selwyn pointed out that: function toseconds ():

                This will NOT work and cannot be EXPECTED to work.

                toseconds() is an Xbasic function. It is not a Javascript function.

                Xbasic does not operate on the client-side. the client side is Javascript. you can only use javascript functions on the client side.

                when you build a client side expression, a5 lets you choose from a limited number of function that it knows how to convert to javascript.

                that list of functions is shown when you click the Insert Function button in the client side expression builder. you will see that toSeconds() is NOT listed.

                however, because we don't list this function, does not mean that you are out of luck.

                you just need to write your own javascript implementation of toseconds(), or better still, your own Javascript function to calculate the time difference between two time values.

                for example, you would go to the Javascript function declarations sections and define this function

                function timeDifference(time1, time2) {
                return ( (Date.parse(time2) -Date.parse(time1))/1000 )
                }

                then your client side calculate field would be

                timeDifference(timevalue1, timevalue2)

                This is a link for a video that defines the how to of the client side expression using the Javascript function declarations sections

                http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/V1...lculations.swf

                You do not get this kind of support from MS. Thanks again
                I will take another whack at it.

                  Re: Time Function problem

                  Thanks to Jay Talbott
                  I also found a solution using a Ajax Callback

                  adding an Onblur event on field Out1 see screen shot below

                  then setting up in Properties
                  Xbasic function declarations

                  function setTime as c (e as p)

                  'This function will handle the Ajax callback.

                  'It must return a string of Javscript commands that will be executed in the Browser.

                  e._set.Hours.value = (ctodt(e._currentRowDataNew.Out1) - ctodt(e._currentRowDataNew.a5fn_In))/3600

                  end function

                  Is their a better way to skin this cat with one data entry field
                  Do you see problems with this?

                  This process worked well and solved the problem. Client side Xbasic has such much power and in the hands of the wrong people could be dangerous. Thanks Jay for the experience. Great insight.
