Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cystal Reports with Alpha 5

I had read that Version 10.5 has support for Crystal Reports, but I'm not exactly sure how it is supported.

Has anyone started using that feature? If so, could you describe how you are using it / how well it works?

I am mostly interested in the web side of things.

I imagine you can just call a crystal report with a link, but I'd like to integrate the report into a grid or a form, if possible. (Thus preserving the same look.)

Just responding so you don't feel ignored Larry.

I'm not a Crystal Reports user so I can't test, but I did look at the release notes that describe the use here, and it looks like this is aimed at desktop/local use, not web use.

Maybe someone from Alpha could pitch in and confirm that my understanding of the notes is correct.

Re: Cystal Reports with Alpha 5

My core business is built around Crystal Reports. I know from an email exchange with Alpha that they believe there is a way to make Crystal run in Alpha on the web. I passed some code to them but do not not know if they have been successful. I dont run the A5 web server so have not spent any time trying to make it work. Still I agree with Alpha at least in concept if it runs their desktop apps it should run in the web apps.

Part of what remains unresolved is the issue of of CR licensing which is very liberal for the desktop, and more restrictive when it comes to web apps.

I guess what I am saying is stay tuned the good folks are working on a solution.

I saw Selwyn running Crystal Reports from Alpha in the office on Wednesday. So yes, we're working on it.

There's some sample code for running Crystal Reports with V10.5 in the release notes at http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/A...easenotes.html

Re: Cystal Reports with Alpha 5

I will post this here, its seems a good a place as any....

I finally took some time to look at the Release Notes example for Crystal Reports. I just wanted to mention that what is being used is CR 11 or XI. It is an out of date version, and so far as I know no longer available albeit special order could be possible. The RDC component is no longer supported, nor found in CR12 or 2008. We are looking for SAP (Business Objects) to release a new version of Crystal in the fall. I suppose to relate to VS2010 it will be called CR2010.

Anyway, the point being that allowing Crystal Report developers to make use of the A5 platform is a terrific idea! However, it appears the current A5solution is based on an old version of Crystal Reports. New Crystal Report developers using new versions of CR wont have the component needed to make this work.

Perhaps A5 is dealing with this issue and I just need to be patient, or perhaps I have misunderstood the coding and component being used.
          Regards,
