Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    AfterUpdateRecord Event

    Hi All,

    I am working with a A5 grid that connects into a MySQL database. The grid works perfectly, no issues.

    However I want to run some additional code on the database when the grid gets updated.

    The grid itself is just a simple 4 field grid that contains userid (primary key), first name, last name and email address.

    I have found the AfterUpdateRecord event. When a particular row gets updated, I want to be able to run some SQL based on that userid. I have tried various combinations with e.rv and so on, but without any luck.

    Is anyone able to point me in the right direction?

    Thank you so much!

    Did you try the video on using JavaScript to run an Xbasic script? This may be similar.

      Raven,

      If you can give us just a little more info, perhaps we can help. What do you mean by "run some SQL". Do you want to do a select, an insert, an update, create a report, or run a stored procedure?

      What have you tried and what result did you get?

        Re: AfterUpdateRecord Event

        Hey Guys,

        Thank you for the quick reply. To give some more information once the grid has updated a particular row, I want to then run additional update statements across several tables, based on the userid from that updated row.

        I have tried to alert out the variables so that I can start building the SQL, but this is where I hit the wall.

        I have tried various combinations of:-
        aa[].text = "alert(e.DataSubmitted);"

        These examples are based on the preexisting template for that event.

        Any pointers would be appreciated.

        Thank you guys!

          Re: AfterUpdateRecord Event

          You could develop some custom xbasic code to update/insert to the relavant tables
          For an sql update code could be similar to
          Code:
          	dim ptr as p
          	dim ptr.errMsg as c =""
          	dim conn as SQL::Connection
          	dim sqlUpdate as C
          	dim ok as l = .f.
          	Dim sqlParams as sql::arguments
          	conn.Open("::name::myconnect")
          	sqlUpdate = <<%txt%
          	UPDATE mytable set firstname=:firstname,lastname=:lastname where USERID=:userID
          %txt%

          	sqlParams.set("userId",e.datasubmitted.userid)
          	sqlParams.set("firstname",e.datasubmitted.firstname)
          	sqlParams.set("lastname",e.datasubmitted.lastname)
          	IF conn.Execute(sqlUpdate,sqlParams)=.f.
          		ptr.errMsg=conn.CallResult.Text
          	END IF
          	conn.close()

            Hi!

            That is most helpful, thank you for the reply I really appreciate it. I am keen to implement the code you posted, but I first tried
            Code:
            aa[].text = "alert(e.datasubmitted.userid);"
            On IE8 a javascript error comes up saying e is not defined. Any ideas?

            Thank you so much!

              the alert function is javascript not xbasic and will execute after the AfterUpdateEvent completes within the browser environment.
              The browser does not recognise server side variables.
              To overcome that you can concat the values or if complex could use code similar to

              dim sJS as c
              sJS="alert('[USERID]');"
              sJS=stritran(sJS,"[USERID]",e.datasubmitted.userid)
              aa[].text =sJS

                Hi,

                Thank you for the reply, I do appreciate it!

                When I put that code into my event, I get the following error message:-
                Error executing AfterUpdateRecord event handler: command: sJS=stritran(sJS,"[USERID]",e.datasubmitted.userid) Property not found
                e.datasubmitted.userid subelement not found.

                Am I doing something wrong? It surely can't be that hard to do what I am asking?

                Thank you so much!

                  If it still fails check spelling and ensure the field is not defined as a label. It needs to be an editable or hidden field.
