Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    So confused with Javascript syntax - help!

    I have a button that when pressed, it want it to do something based on what is in a couple of fields on the grid.

    So the first javascript is to make sure certain fields are not false or empty.

    I have tried many, many different configurations but when it works, I continue to get the same results - that is, what was ever last stored (true/false or the text) remains even though I can clearly see the field's value that it should be checking is different than what the alert box is displaying.

    Here are a couple of test samples that I have been working with:

    PHP Code:
    var ssep             =     {grid.Object}.getValue('G','REPORT_READER_SSEP',1);
    var
    fill_emg        =    {grid.Object}.getValue('G','FILL_EMG',1);

    if(
    ssep==''){

    alert('Show this.  Fill_EMG= '+fill_emg+'  SSEP Comments:'+ssep);
    return;
    }

    if(
    fill_emg){

    alert('Show this.  Fill_EMG= '+fill_emg+'  SSEP Comments:'+ssep);
    return;

    I have tried different browsers, different computers, cleaned out my cache, etc.

    My back end is MS SQL.

    And when do you use " = vs == "? (I even have seen === in the literature??)

    It seems to make a difference if I am using a logical bit and if the grid is a check box vs a text field, as well as on how how I use "true" vs "1" or the assumption that a field is true (ei if(var){ . . .)

    I want to know:

    1) how to make sure that if the value changes and you can see the change in the grid, the button press will reflect that.

    2) What syntax do you use in the above examples for checking if a var is true or false? How many equal signs, etc.

    I am sure others are confused as well .. . any good resources for using Javascript with Alpha like this?

    Thanks - I appreciate any help!

    = is used for assigning a value
    == is used for comparing values

      Frank,

      Now there is a nice clear explanation! Got it - thanks!

      Now I need to figure out why my vars are "sticking" and not changing as the actual data is is clearly changing in the grid.

      Any ideas?

        Re: So confused with Javascript syntax - help!

        I think your grid values are sticking because your code:

        PHP Code:
        var ssep             =     {grid.Object}.getValue('G','REPORT_READER_SSEP',1);
        var
        fill_emg        =    {grid.Object}.getValue('G','FILL_EMG',1);
        is assigning the values when the page is generated.

        When I want to use Javascript to get the current value on the page, I use something like the following:

        PHP Code:
        var strRow={Grid.RowNumber};
        var
        strColourValue=document.getElementById('GRID_APPOI.V.R'+strRow+'.APT_COLOUR').value;
        alert(strColourValue);
        My code above is set on the OnChange javascript for my APT_COLOUR field.

        The APT_COLOUR field is a dropdownbox, with multiple HTML colour codes.

        When you select a different colour in the drop down, the OnChange javascript event fires, and will show you the colour code selected.

        To find the field name (GRID_APPOI.V.R?.APT_COLOUR), you should publish your page, and view it in the browser, then search for the field using View Source. I've noticed that the grid name can be different when viewing with LIVE PREVIEW and viewing in a browser after publishing the page/component.

        Hopefully this will help.

        Thanks,

        Robert

          An update on this..

          i just saw another post that had:

          {grid.Object}._getValue......

          rather than

          {grid.Object}.getValue......

          Maybe this was the issue with your original code?

            I actually have another javascript with the {grid.Object}._getValue...... that I had created months ago. When I try using this variation now, it gives an error plus when you use the "Insert Grid method. . ",; that inserts {grid.Object}.getValue...... and that function works without an error.

            I guess it must have changed somewhere along the way . . . . but thanks.
