Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Feature Packs

My opinion is that Alpha deserves to make millions - they are hard at work producing quality software that enables us to create great software much quicker and at a much lower cost than anywhere else!

My only concern is that we have grown accustomed to being blown away by new versions that always include a huge number of new, cool features at a fair price. I would hate to see alpha's future versions be less than "wow" releases, and then only include the great stuff as feature packs. As long as they continue to deliver great new versions with most of the "wow" stuff included at a reasonable price, then i am quite pleased. Then, the feature packs could be an additional revenue stream for alpha that would provide a very special feature that would save a developer countless hours and money to produce themselves.

BUT the amount of time I spend learning A5 is high due to lack of decent doc. If I multiply the nbr of hours spent in trial and error trying to figure out things, even @ $3/hr amounts to several hundred dollars. The learning time and frustration more that make up for the low A5 price.
On the other hand it is a real fact that little guys like me cannot afford to use any other competitive product because they are outrageously expensive AND complicated.
re learning tools -- we recently came out with total web training http://www.imakenews.com/alphasoftwa...x000459839.cfm which is a companion to the earlier total training video course.

In addition we run comprehensive 5 day training courses (in person live training.) The next one is Sept 13-17th http://www.imakenews.com/alphasoftwa...x000454378.cfm

We also come out tutorials such as this one 57 page Tutorial Guide - Migrating MS Access desktop apps to Alpha Five v10.5 Web/Intranet apps.

        Re: Feature Packs

Im ok with feature packs but my biggest concern is if these features don't get into v11 for free, because normally in the past all this kind of features where included at no additional cost and if they don't get in that means that we will get trimmed down versions of alpha from now on. so hopefully they'll make it
        Cheers

I like either the yearly subscription for an all inclusive upgrade

          --or--

build my own feature pack combos with reduced pricing in buying more than one feature pack.

              Richard,

I just want to say thanks! I have been using Alpha since version 3 and keep coming back. I ran across a few posts I had made about 10 years back and decided to follow a few threads.
It is AMAZING what you have accomplished with your software over the years.
If you want some good entertainment, and have the time, look at some of the older posts and see how far this company has come.
BTW, the other two pieces of software I need for my business cost me well over $4,000 each, so no price complaints here!

                Chad,

I can't imagine that v10 feature packs wouldn't work in v11. That would be an outrage. If that were the case then they would have to sell it as an annually (or per version ) renewable/payable license. I don't know if anyone out there is using subscription based software licensing schemes these days. In the past, most or all failed. Alpha tries that once, I believe, with little success.

Hope this helps. I got this in my email

All Feature Packs Guaranteed to Work with Next Version of Alpha Five

If you are concerned that these feature packs may become obsolete soon after you buy them, don't be. Work on version 11 is ongoing but it will be a while before it is released sometime in 2011 (currently there is no official release date). However, when Version 11 is finally released these feature packs are guaranteed to work. Your investment is secure.

John, Richard, thanks for the info on this.

This question has been asked repeatedly here on the messageboard and never has been specifically answered until now so there has always been this question in the back of many minds (and probably hindered sales I would imagine).
