Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Thanks Peter. I did not visit that site until you pointed it out. THAT IS NOT ALPHA'S Xbasic.

        Re: Software as a Service (Saas) and Multi-tenant Architecture

        I am going through the book written by Peter Wayne, I have found that copying his exact xbasic into the latest version of alpha 5's xbasic code editor does not work, for example.
        cust=table.open("customer")
        query.filter="left(lastname,1)='M"
        query.options="T" \I also noticed that the autocode feature never shows "query.options"
        query.order=""
        qry=cust.query_create()
        ? qry.records_get() \at this point it should return =10 but ---nothing!
        qry.drop()
        cust.close() \this also returned an error

        my problem is that if the danged books are wrong where do you learn? frustrated...do you guys see anything wrong with it?

          query.filter="left(lastname,1)='M"

          is missing a single quote to close the literal value of M

          query.filter="left(lastname,1)='M'"

          \ does not make a line a comment - at least in the Alpha world...

            I just added the \comments for clarity - however thanks for pointing out the closure mark - I did not see it so without going back to the code editor that was probably my fault...so I go from frustrated to half blind. I was thinking about how I just hyjacked the thread anyway...sorry about that too. Boy what a difference that little apostrophe can make, that little fella is a hard worker holding all that code together.
            I guess I need to pay attention to syntax!

            so again, once I figure things out (maybe a year)
            I will come back and post some thoughts to the guy who like me
            is having a hard time with this and wondering how to build a multi tenant web app with A5.

              Charles,

              Multi-tenant. Unfortunately I don't have time to respond in detail. Basically you have to redirect to an a5w page with xbasic which processes your user and then redirect to your main page or tabbed_ui or whatever.

                Thanks Peter,
                so then, is it the code behind each query (using variables and session objects) that allows each "tenant" to access his or her user specific database information? the redirect is the easy part of course. It seems the alpha 5 login can filter (per user) stuff based on group settings, page security settings etc. but offers nothing in the way of specific user "owned" or "entered" data - seems like this would be an easy and logical next step in improving this software if it isnt already part of it...seems retarded to create a unique group for each tenant with all new tables per group...

                  Ideally, you won't redirect the user to any different page depending on login. Since you can determine who the user is at login, including what group(s) they belong to (I don't mean security groups here) you can customize the images, text, everything based on that information.

                    Here is a good and clear document what the pros and cons are about multi-tenant approach what in your situation may apply

                      Scott, I didn't recognize you were the original poster. I guess we are sort of working on this already regarding my Shopping Cart modification to be multi-tenant.
