Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

UTF8 in AlphaFive

Hello,
I developing application for company in my country (Slovakia) and I must do it in slovak language. Therefore I must use character with diacritical like ľčť .
For labels and other text I using &#xxx; convention for example is &# 225;. It is not very practical, when I must write "n&# 225;zov" instead "nzov", but I can live with that. Yes, I can use <a5:r>, but this is usefull when two or more languages are used in application, for one is'nt practical.
When I try translate some messages in FileUpload I find out, that &#xxx; is not usable in everywhere. After lot of researching I found solution, which is little bit horrible (look at picture). This http://www.the-art-of-web.com/javascript/escape/ help me.
I understand why I have to use different coding for characters, but it isn't look very nice.

Could anybody advice better sollution?
And <a5:r> doesn't work correctly in this case.

Hey Tekri,

Where are you having problems with the Language Definitions? I've set up a new language, "Slovakian", and added the <a5:r> </a5:r> tags to the "Title" and "Click here" messages of the File Upload Dialog. Attached is the result... seems to work here. Did you change your default language in the OnGridInitialize to

e.tmpl.activeLanguage = "Slovakian"

Is the attached what you're looking for?

David,
If you go to the interactive window and type:

?*html_escape("entre") then you'll get the encode value: "entrée"

But I remember a a discussion I had with Selwyn where he pointed out that encoding would not be necessary anymore but I have trouble reconstructing it. Will dig into it

Here's the link to the wiki "Foreign" Language support page. There's a video in there that walks you through the process.

Overall,

Put in your tags
Create a new language
Set the from
Set the to
Change the default language in your grid

Brilliant.

I like donkey, using also in language definitions &#xxx; encoding for international characters. I try use characters just typed from keyboard and it's working now. But still, it isn't elegant solution for single non-english language application.

Thanks for advice.

Tekri,

Yes, I can see how it would be a bit of work to get it all done, but still nice there's a way. When you're done, would you report back here to let us know how many entries are in your language definition?

Would be really nice if one "File Upload" dialog could inherit from a "changed language" File Upload dialog. Then you would have to set the language tags again. Going to go look into that. You could make a copy of a changed language grid and alter that, but still a bit of work.

HTML Escape Tool and Language Definition

If I paste Cyrillic or Arabic text into the HTML Escape tool (http://www.htmlescape.net/htmlescape_tool.html) and then paste the Escaped Result into the Alpha Five Language Definition, the Cyrillic or Arabic text is displayed correctly in a Dialog.

I would like, however, to be able to paste the Cyrillic or Arabic text directly into the Language Definition to eliminate this inconvenient workaround.

Lawrence,
In what component are you working? Can you put some Cyrillic and/or Arabic characters on this board (hope those will display correctly here) or a clear screenshot?

Re: HTML Escape Tool and Language Definition

On this page under "Writing system" you'll see some sample Cyrillic and Arabic text. If you copy and paste either into the Dialog Language Definition, you'll see that the text is replaced with question marks. Some of the Latin characters don't paste correctly as well.

The same thing happens if you paste Cyrillic or Arabic text into a field's 'Field Label' property.

Lawrence,
I fighting a long time with html escape codes, but I' surrend .
Now I'm using <a5:r></a5:r> as tags and text file in unicode and in every grid in OnGridExecute event I add following code:
Code:
e.tmpl.encodeLanguageStringAsUTF8 = .f.
e.tmpl.exportColumnHeadingsConvertToUTF8 = .f.
e.tmpl.languageDefinition = file.to_string(".\textSK.txt")
and textSK.txt contain for example:
Code:
<a5:r>Enter a new record</a5:r>="Nov zznam"
<a5:r>Cancel edits to this record</a5:r>="Vrtiť spť vykonan zmeny"
<a5:r>Delete record</a5:r>="Vymazať zznam"
I editing text file with notepad++ and directly type international characters inside text file.
Text file is stored in directory, where is also grid definitions and publish will copy that file to web folder.

I think your method a) always overrides the default language and b) doesn't allow more than one language.

you are right partially, because:
a) I have language definition strings at one place
b) it's possible to have several language text file and little modify OnGridExecute event to load apropriate text file based on some condition, for example logged user, retrieve country from ipaddress ...
c) it's easy to send a text file to translator guy for translate
