Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Creating a table of upload images, yikes!

Got the Image Upload Feature Pack. Created a table of images. They're linked from a list of Patients. So, click the patient, see a list of images below in a linked grid.

PROBLEM: Can't upload an image unless you save the record first. So, the doctor would need to save a blank record somehow, then upload the image.

MY QUESTION: How are others getting around this? Are you using a completely different workaround?

WHAT I TRIED: Put a "dummy" hidden field next to the image field, then have the "Add Image" button put some random text in the "dummy" field, then save the record, then trigger the Image Upload Action. That way, the record would be saved, and the image upload should work. However, alpha doesn't realize the record is saved until AFTER the Javascript routines run completely, apparently, so I still get the error that "you can't add an image to a record that hasn't been saved".

Long and Short: I don't blame you if you don't respond, but I hope someone does at least let me know how they created a table of images for someone!

What you've done is the approach I would have taken. I think if I was faced with this, I would create the new record, navigate away from that new record to
another record, then come back and trigger the upload. I know in filemaker the scripts don't always fire in the sequence that you design them. You design
something to do 1,2,3 but the program figures it would be more efficient to do 1,3,2. Just a thought

      Thanks for the reply, Bill!

As an update, I think I'm getting there... almost.

Here's what I've done, for the record:

In the Mouse Down event for my "Upload Image" button, I dirty a hidden field and then save the record. Then, in the Mouse Up event, I trigger the image upload.

Why this is still shaky: If I click quickly, the record doesn't save in time and I get the "Can't upload before saving record" error. If I click down, pause a second, then release, it works! So now, I'm just trying to figure out a way to "pause" for one second, and all should be fine.

So, does anyone know how to insert a pause using the Javascript events? I tried searching for an answer, and I'm still searching. Obviously, I'm not a Javascript guru yet.

Also for the record, I may completely re-work this with a custom button that creates a record, brings it up, then fires the "Upload Image" script. I'm worried that slow browsers/connections may not work properly, even with a one second delay.

TotallyCovered did you ever get this working?

I too have a need to allow my users to upload an image without having to create a new record first.

If you are using a button to trigger the upload just have the button save the record and then upload the image?
As you have suggested. I dont think there will be a problem with browsers. If there is put a small sleep(.5) in between the functions.

            Hi Chad and Rich,

I will try the delay again. I'm porting this over to V.11 this week. The trouble I've had is, the delay doesn't seem to fire "in order" that I specify the events to happen. I tested this by having a msgbox popup before the record save (to create a delay), and it happens out of order. Reversing the order didn't help, either. Seems that the events fire in some different order, perhaps by type.

Right now, there's a button on my app that says, quite literally, "Step 1: Create New Record". That creates the record. Then, a button titled "Step 2: Upload Image" becomes available. Nobody has questioned it, but of course it bothers me.
