Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How much RAM?

We are new to Alpha and developing our first web application. When looking at hosting options most providers quote 2GB RAM and then additional for more RAM. How can we get an idea of how much RAM we should ask for? Does Alpha chew it up?

    Re: How much RAM?

Hi, I have been in your shoes before and unfortunately there's never a clear cut answer about this question in message board or through alpha CS

This I quote from Lenny Forziati's post in 11-05-2008
Alpha will take advantage of CPU and hard drive caching, but it will not benefit from mulitple processors at this time.

Memory will depend on your application and the number of users you have, but I think 4GB is probbaly overkill. 1GB is probably enough for most apps, 2GB won't hurt if you can afford it but may not help much if your app doesn't need it.
Not the bold part seems to be why hard to find a clear cut answer to this.. There's no way to tell until you deploy your application and upgrade as required be

      Re: How much RAM?

This is based on my client's experience....

If you are going with Zebrahost, Clive has evolved a very efficient use of RAM with Alpha. If you are using another host, you may want to increase these numbers...

I have one client using a dbf back end with relatively small tables on a lightly used site, and he runs just fine on a Hyper-V with 1 G RAM and 1 core.

I have another client using a MySQL back end with large tables ( 500K records + ) and lightly used, and he functions well with 2 cores and 2 G RAM. The second core is for MySQL. As mentioned above, Alpha only uses one core per instance.

I have another client with MySQL, large tables and heavy use. He uses 4 cores, 4 G RAM and multiple instances of the WAS to get good response.

I have another client who has MySQL, large tables, heavy use. He has a dedicated server with 4 cores, 8 G RAM, multiple instances. He never uses the full 8 G. Usually in the 3 to 4G range.

        Re: How much RAM?

Many thanks for your helpful comments. I will get some input from Clive at Zebrahost. It appears that there are a number of factors, one of which could be the use of a dbf back end instead of a MySQL backend.
