Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Greg, it's a case of "be careful what you wish for.." Alpha is a very BIG development tool, you could easily have a 30 month quick start coving the subject, so you will need to be specific in what you want your programmer to achieve, (I'm certain the usual suspects will "Jump in here", to assist with a fix all!) but I would like you to contact me directly with the details of the project and custom build your tutorial to suit the specific need of what he needs to be trained in.

      Hi Pete,
scalable images - the hidden power of the grid
I knew there had to be a way of not having to create extra images on the server.

There is so much power in what Alpha has created, it is like a sweet junky going into the sweet factory and being told eat what you want, so where do you start?

Thanks again for another informative video.

Re: Six Video's ideal for newbie'son how to use some insert special controls function

        Greg,

In Alpha Five - Help Menu - third from the top - Getting Started Videos. They are an excellent orientation.

However, as Peter says, Alpha Five is a big power tool. There's so much to know and so many possibilities that no set of "getting started" videos could ever possibly do more than get you oriented. I highly recommend some customized training. Even if you think it's "not in the budget", trust me, you need to put it in the budget. You can burn an awful lot of time doing it otherwise, and then at least some of what you've done will either be done wrong or done clunky - and now you're basing an entire application on wrong or clunky. I found that I very quickly wanted to do more interesting things, and some outside help let me do exactly what I wanted, and not compromise to suit my skill level.

          Dear Peter,

I tried to send you a private message, but I don't have the appropriate permissions to do so. My email address is [email protected].

I couldn't agree with Wendy more. There are some very specific rules that I want to make sure that our new programmer follows. Most of these I have learned from this message board over the last several years.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

          Greg

Re: Six Video's ideal for newbie'son how to use some insert special controls function

Someplace in those videos he demonstrated Show/Hide for containers. That gave me an idea for how to do something I was just started to try and figure out - Show/Hide for in-line text. Here it is:

              In the grid:
              grid_builder_showing_hide.png
I also had to add 0 right padding and 0 right margin to the Container with the minimum value. The dash and SF suffix are via a freeform area. That's the part I hadn't figure out - the extra text. I knew how to do the Show/Hide for a field - but then I'd have a dash and an extra "SF" just hanging out there. By putting the whole thing in a Container and doing Show/Hide on the whole thing, I get what I need - all or nothing.

              And the result:
              show-hide_result.png

PS - This is a demonstration page, that drunk view of the first house will NOT be in the final!

Thank you Peter. I'm sure the experienced developers would have gone right to that solution, but when us newbies are still learning, these little demonstrations can really help connect the dots.

Thank you Peter. I'm trying. I have the bruises on my forehead to prove it!

Do you have any tips for customizing where the record controls are in an editable Grid when using Containers etc? I love the control we have on a desktop form and am very frustrated with the lack of control on the web side. The readily available record navigation and control options are very technical looking, too small and the placement options are very limited.

In the middle choice - Form (Columnar) - used with containers - if it's an editable grid, I can't even get the "delete" button to NOT be inside the last container!

Seeing in Insert... Special Controls, a button option, and seeing that we can put javascript etc on a button, I'm guessing this can be customized however we want. But, I know that without a shove in the right direction, it would take me a year and a day to figure it out.

There is a lot you can do with the tools in the grid - here is an example - I will be showing this kind of thing in the Master Class Video's Click here.

Exactly. Big buttons, little buttons, pretty buttons, buttons here, buttons there - buttons where ya want da buttons....

I don't have a lot of money right now, but I'm going to find the money for those videos. When did you say they'll be available? You're not waiting for them to be perfect are you? ;-)

                                - Pete and
                                - Keith Clearly this is a Brilliant way of practically demonstrating what and how great results can be achieved in A5.

The only problem is that are wetting the appetite particularly of new users such as my self.
Further more, are you aware of a video dealing with emailing? Particularly about auto responding? I am ware about various posting of xbasic code etc.
The video demonstrations are a superior way.
Finally please keep adding new subjects and many thanks for all your work to date.
