Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Action JavaScript download file issue...

All, having issues with the action javascript for downloading files other than .pdf. .pdf download and open without problem.

In example .doc, .xlsx appear to download but do not trigger word/excel applications to open the file as they once did. I've checked my project properties to make sure those files types were included... any suggestions?

The behaviour my system between a pdf and docx file is a bit different, but still allows an open.

With a PDF a windows dialog displays and asks to Open or Save. Clicking Open just opens it.
With a docx I get an Open or Save dialog, click Open, and then I get an Open or Save dialog again. Click open on the 2nd dialog does open the file.

Click Save for either a PDF or DOCX does save the file and then a Download Complete dialog displays that allows an Open.

Try another browser where you may not have plugins to open office documents. The file download actually works with a hidden iframe so it probably downloads & opens the files but you just don't see it.

Re: Action JavaScript download file issue...

Aha! I just submitted a bug report on same, and in the process realized what fly is in the ointment. I'm trying to do Zip files. A PDF file with spaces in the filename will work just fine, but not a Zip. Once I take the spaces out, all works as expected. I haven't tried excel or word docs.

I can't expect my clients to be editing all their file names. So, the change has to be done by A5. Does anybody know what we'd do to our File Upload buttons to have it change the filenames to either eliminate spaces or replace them with an underscore? I'm guessing it will be in the transformation expression (I'm using the <ShortFilename> exactly as in Selwyn's video) - but I'm just not quite savvy enough to get this right on my own.

Also - for a Zip file, it doesn't find "open" program automatically. I know once I do it once, it will remember it, but I can't seem to figure out how to select Windows Explorer as a program. It's not on the program list, so I know I have to go find the exe - but that old Bill Gates is a tricky one... Does anybody know how or where I can select Windows Explorer as a program?

By looking at Properties for a File Manager, I see:
                %windir%\explorer.exe

And some more hunting finds c:\windows\explorer.exe

But using that produces garbage - it downloads it as file.zip-2.htm instead of just file.zip

                Big Sigh.

Well, at least I've figured out how to get download to work correctly for our in-house needs....

yeah - that was my first thought. But, when you browse to find a program, you're not browsing the Program list, you're just browsing the folders and files. Jeesh. This shouldn't be this hard. I can't possibly be the first person to want to upload and download zip files!

                    Or, for zip files...

From one of my failures, I saw that the download dbx is actually a page called _A5FileDownload.a5W

If I can't get it to Open right, I could simply have Save be the only option - avoiding any confusion. Does anybody know how I'd do my own download page and have the download button use that?

I am a little confused by the back and forth in this thread, but if I have understood the issue, WendyWelton is saying that if you upload a filename that has a .zip extension and if there are spaces in the filename, then file download does not work properly.

I just created a test case and in my test case, there is no problem at all, as shown in the video:

I just realized I'm only having a problem in Firefox. I think Selwyn is using IE in the video, and mine works exactly like his when I use IE. I'm also getting just lovely results with Safari and Chrome. I'm on Firefox 8.0

Kim, David, Kamel - what browser are you using? Can you try the others and see what results you get?

Re: Action JavaScript download file issue...

We have identified and fixed a FireFox-specific issue when there are spaces in the downloaded file name. The FireFox team considers this not to be a bug, even though they acknowledge that all other browsers work properly and there is a 3rd-party FF add-on to work around the problem. See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=221028 for the complete discussion.

We were able to address this at the server level and the next V11 release will allow spaces in file names to work as desired in FireFox as well as other browsers.

I'm really glad A5 has found a way to work around Firefox's issue, as it will avoid us having to even talk about it with our clients. Thanks both for the update and the upcoming improvement.
