Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Statistics challenge! Struggling with calculated fields on a report.

I'm not sure I know enough about calculated fields and associated functions to know how to achieve this or even to know if it's possible, so any kind of input would be fantastic help:

I have a report which will generate statistics on records entered into the database within a range of weeks specified by the user.
The fields that I'm struggling with at the moment grant awards for reaching certain milestones.

e.g. For achieving more than 6 sales in each week for two consecutive weeks, an award is granted.
In the weeks 1-4 of the new year, if the "Sales" field in the Activity table is 6 or more in weeks 1 and 2 then 1 award is granted. Also, if the "Sales" field for weeks 3 and 4 are 6 or above then a second award is granted. However, only 2 awards can be granted per 4 week range. In the above example, no award would be granted for having achieved 6 or more sales in the weeks 2 and 3.

    How would this be achievable?
I started by using an odd mix of if() and dbsum() functions to work it out, but I've not come to a solution yet, and I've no idea how to exclude weeks that have already been considered for an award.

Again, any input will help direct my train of thought. Thanks for reading!!

Looking into the *sql_where() function to see if I can't use it for the field.
Also thinking about calculative some values separately by defining them in subgroups, and then using those values. I can't predict how well that will work though.

      Still working on statistics.
I'm wondering; is there a way to look at n number of values at return the highest of the group?

I need to display a value for the highest number of appointments in a week. This value is calculated by adding together 3 other values for each day. Each record has a date associated with it.
I just can't get my head around it! I've tried a couple of solutions, but none of them solved anything.

      reportcompare.jpg

The sub-reports have their own filters, showing records from a range of weeks e.g. January shows records in week(Date) 1 through 4.
Highlighted in red, Most appts booked in 1 week is the one causing the trouble.

The only solution that I've tried that seemed viable so far involved a lot of sub-reports, and the report is already pretty sub-report heavy.
Could Grouping by week(Date) help out in this case? So far I've found that I have the totals for Appts Booked, but then no way to compare them in a range to determine which is the highest. Also introducing new Groups messes with the statistics that are working already. Hmm hmm.

Going to try working in some Groups to the existing sub-reports and derive the values that I need.

So, if I do something like:

        weekMaxBooked = maximum(calc->apptBooked, grp->SubWeek, grp->Subreport:detail)

...SubWeek being a group inside the Subreport that breaks on week(Date). I'd have the booked values for each week, but then would need some way to compare them and get the maximum value.

Re: Statistics challenge! Struggling with calculated fields on a report.

As usual, the solution was quite simple!
Just typing it out on here helped organize my thoughts I think :P

So I got the values in weekMaxBooked, specified in my last post, and then created another calculated value:

          mostBookedWeek = maximum(weekMaxBooked)

          Sorted.

            New problem:

x = 1 if 3 consecutive records are above another comparable value.

            In context - if sales for months 1 + 2 + 3 are above the target values for months 1 + 2 + 3 then award = award + 1.

I can think of a long winded way of doing it that would involve specifying a calculated field for each combination of 3, but that would just be bad and I think I can anticipate a couple issues that approach might have, beyond the obvious design ones.
