Field validation

Is there a way to validate a field on a form from a table using the value of another field in the same table.

I have an auto suggest field for companies, what I want is to check if this company is active or not, and if not display a validation message saying so.

Hi David,

I have a very similar situation except it is to check if a voucher is valid. The following code is used in the Validation Xbasic under Display Settings.

function validate_Voucher_id as p (e as p)

	dim valid as l
	dim v_date1 as d
	dim v_date2 as d
	dim valid as L
	if e.data.voucher_id > "" then
	v_date1=lookupd("F",e.data.voucher_id,"voucher_start_date","discount","Voucher_Id")
	v_date2=lookupd("F",e.data.voucher_id,"voucher_end_date","discount","Voucher_Id")
	valid = between(date(),v_date1,v_date2 )

if  valid <> .T. then
   validate_Voucher_id.hasError = .t.
   validate_Voucher_id.errorText = "Sorry, this Voucher Code is not valid."
end if
	end if
end function

Only in your case you just want to check the field that shows Active. Hope this helps.

Hi Keith, this is what I have come up with but it does not work.

if e.data.Company_Name > "" then
actives=lookupc("F",e.data.Company_Name,"Active","A5_Project_New","Company_Name")
if actives = "false" then
validate_Company_Name.hasError = .t.
validate_Company_Name.errorText = "Sorry, this company is not active."

end function

Two questions.

What does this line mean - if e.data.Company_Name > "" then as it prevents all my other validation from working, but it does work if I use = instead.

Does this line - actives=lookupc("F",e.data.Company_Name,"Active","A5_Project_New","Company_Name") mean that it looks up the A5_Project_New table for a field named Active and return its value?

Hi David,

Looks like you are on the right road.

Q1; If the field is greater than blank then do the following. Which in this case is the lookup.
Q2; Yes.

When you say it does not work, what does not happen that you expect to happen? Do you get a result from the lookup?

got it to work, had to use an SQL lookup as I am talking to an Access DB
