Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Multi-User file issues "you must first save or cancel your changes"

    Using Alpha5 v10.5 web application.
    Also using TabbedUI

I have a "master" grid that has parent/child tables.
I also have several "tabs" that access the same tables (some for "master" record keeping functions, some for "reports".

If there is more than 1 user accessing the same "tabs" in the tabbedui
    OR
If the SAME user has opened more than 1 Tab that accesses the SAME tables, we are getting the following error when trying to SEARCH (via search grid) OR even just when trying to CLOSE the tab (ie no records were even opened to edit)

    Error received:
"You must first Save or Cancel Your Changes".

No records were opened for editing, and the grids are set to NOT open in New Record Mode.

I would not expect this to be a problem in a web application where it should be assumed that multiple users will be accessing files simultaneously. Again, this is not an issue of multiple users trying to edit the same record. Records are not even being opened and we are getting this error.

    Has anyone else experienced this?
Anyone know how to fix this?
People are becoming very impatient and frustrated with it.

    Thank you so much! Kim

Re: Multi-User file issues "you must first save or cancel your changes"

I think I found the solution. After reading this post:

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ew-from-script

I realized I was doing something similair. Though I have not thoroughly tested it yet on the web application, I believe this will resolve the issue.

In the javascript system event "OnRowStateChange" I was using _getvalue AND _setvalue. While my intent was to set the value of fields whenever a new record was entered, or a record was changed / edited, I overlooked that this event also fires when a record is "viewed". I believe my _setvalues were putting records into edit mode while they were being viewed, causing the constant error "You must Save or Cancel Changes".

If changing this does not work, I will be back! So thankful for this forum and all the people that take time to post both questions and solutions.

Okay, things seemed to work but now we are getting that same darn error.

"You must first Save or Cancel your changes"

We are getting this error when "SEARCHING" via the SEARCH GRID.
For instance , we open a new tab on the tabbedUI (grid component).
We SEARCH for lastname (first time through works fine)
Then, when We CLEAR SEARCH on the search Grid, we get the error : "You must first Save or Cancel your changes"

No records have been opened for edit, the grid is set to "Show New Records on Demand" only.

Any suggestions? This has sucked up several days, I'm really hoping someone has experienced this and has a solution.....

      Thank you!

Okay, an extremely simple solution to 10 days of extreme hair-pulling , want to smash my computer, frustration... you know the saying, if it were a snake I would have been bitten (umpteen million times).

I had set a Calculated FIELD Expression (under Client Side Properties) to a SESSION Variable. Evidently, this was automatically "dirtying" the record, even though a record was never selected to edit/enter/delete. I did not realize that a Calc Field Expression would dirty a record on SEARCHES and BROWSES (ie, even just "paging" through the Grid caused the above error).

I thought that Calc Field Expressions only went into effect if a record was 1) Selected for update or Enter mode and 2) a field was "dirtied"

I am using Calc Field Expressions in other fields, and have never had this problem. So obviously it must be directly related to the SESSION variable, which is set to pick up the USERID when the User Logs in.

Well, glad I was able to dialog with myself in this post and hopefully this might help some frustrated programmer from wasting days or weeks on what turns out to be a very simple error.

Actually, not. Must be a Colorado expression? Glad you solved your problem.
