Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Norman welcome to the forum!

I read through the forum and cannot find a solution
you probably haven't used the advanced search feature of the forum where you can search titles only: check how many posts exist already in the forum about this port 80 in use

You could try to configure alpha to use another port by going to control panel --> tools menu --> web application server or you could try to fugure out which program is using port 80 and change that to use another port.

Thanks. Sometimes solutions to a problem seems so far and difficult to find, but if you have a forum like this it becomes easier. I found a solution.

      1. I changed the port in the WAS to a port not being used.
      2. In the ADSL router I changed the port forwarding settings as follows:
      a. From Port: 80 to port the new port as changed in step 1.

      It works wonderful

Sounds like something else (a windows service) may be hanging. It could also be a firewall or even a/v causing issues.
If you're not running off a dedicated server, there might be another program stealing the port when all inbound connections are closed?
For kicks, try setting everything to port 8888. If it still doesn't work, look at your windows log events for critical stops to see what may be "failing."

You don't have IIS installed, but if you did I'd check all websites to make sure they are only using 1 version of .net., or maybe front page extensions, sharepoint etc....... Somehow, a Windows update (at some point) resulted in duplicate "somethings" running within the IIS setting framework. (I''ve got a server that used to lock up email every couple of months because one of the URL's somehow had conflicting (multiple) versions of "something" being active. ~ At least that's what I recall was the problem.) After disabling the old version the problem has never reoccurred. (it's been over a year, knock on wood.) ~ When this would happen, (prior to fixing) a reboot of the server was necessary. Somehow the conflict was causing a service (necessary to receive inbound smtp mail into the mail server) to fail. (hence the reboot)

The first instance of WAS may still be running after the fail. Have you <ctrl><alt><deleted> to see if any WAS 10.5 services are still active after it errors out? (before you try to restart WAS)

I had the same problem. At random times the Alpha Five server would just stop responding to web requests.
My solution was to have the server reboot itself at 02:30 every day.
I haven't had the problem since.
On a side note, I do have approximately 40 computers do automatic refreshes every 15 seconds. I have no idea
if that is the cause of the problem, but I can deal with a 3 minute maintenance window if it solves the problem.

Norman, if you haven't already got it, try this.
              http://www.whatsrunning.net/
Its invaluable and free. Shows everything you might want to know about.
I had a similar problem when I downloaded the Microsoft WebMatrix stuff. Blocked Port 80 with a closed web page.
So if you have been testing pages, have a look to see what port they are attached to.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

                Norman,

most probably you have Skype installed on your PC which is using port 80. In Skype select Tools/Advanced/Connection & deselect "use port 80 & 443 as an alternative for incoming connections"
