Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hi Larry,

Not sure of what issues you might be referring to, but I run Alpha Five v7, v8, v10, v11 & v12 on Win-7 64-bit. I don't have any clients on v9, thus I'm not using it, although that runs fine on Win-7 as well. At least that's my day to day experience.

      Re: Alphav10 on Windows 8

I simply run RT from a folder on the root drive with a reason in mind. When I install to a client computer, the runtime goes to that same folder. In my case that is c:\alda the shadow files are also installed directly beneath in whichever folder needed like c:\alda\upslog or c:\alda\sugar. I have no folders named shadow. the data(server) folder goes to a server/peer computer and the boot strap helps the new user find those files that they installed "who knows where".

This works extremely well. But the point is back to win8.1 and win8 and I have had 0 problems with v7-v11 on a win 7 machine with my installs. Note that I do have installs for the "extra curricular files" that runtime requires to be installed.
win8 seems to work just fine like win7 for me, win 8.1 has to have a bit of help.

I DO run development v11 from program files where it defaults on my own machine. I don't send dev with my apps and hopefully my customers do not have development.

        Re: Alphav10 on Windows 8

I think the newest thing with alpha is that they are including chrome with the later downloads. I find it slow and prefer Fire Fox, but either of them seem better than IE for many reasons and should eliminate the problems. But, I have not used WCD, so no testing.

I do know that one of the largest software providers in the auto industry does use chrome exclusively with their deployments. There has to be a reason.

          Re: Alphav10 on Windows 8

Re: WCD. I discovered last week that a V11 WCD application does not run on Win8.1/IE11. My client tried and then I tested. Same WCD application does run fine using V12 WCD. I am told this is because WCD uses Working Preview to display the web components in the desktop application, and V11 working preview fails on Win8.1/IE11.

For those who do not know the term WCD, it means Web Components running in Desktop. It is a means to create a Desktop application that is all or partly comprised of traditional web components like the TabbedUI, grids, etc.

steve, did you test using chrome or fire fox?
If you need any testing via win8.1, I will volunteer for you if needed.

Dave, we're talking desktop here, not web. No choice of browser as V11 has built-in code to render any WCD components using the IE engine. Problem is that Microsoft changed something in IE11 which broke Alpha and Alpha decided not to supply a fix for V11.

Steve, read the second paragraph. I don't recall why, but I believe it has to do with administrative privileges.
You would need to ask Cal. So on the desktop side, I install Alpha's runtime and developmental application to the root of C:.

I went through all this when Win 7 came out. See CAL's posts on the subject re Win 9.

                    Re: Alphav10 on Windows 8

I just successfully installed Alpha Five v. 10 on Windows 8.1.
As others report, it ends with the error message about not being licensed for this operating system.
Solution: In the Start menu, I simply right click on the Alpha Five program, left click "Troubleshoot compatibility" and let it work out the optimal configuration. In this case, it suggested "Windows 7", and it works fine. Having confirmed that, I told it to save that setting for all future uses.
