Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What are default units for web component text fields?

    Hello!

In SQL table I have defined field as NVarChar(12). When I create web component based on that table I got in TextBox Properties | Size value 12. In which measurement units are that 12 here and on other fields??

For example: For the grid I enabled Query-by-Example row, fields show on top. I would like to achieve that QBE fields sizes will match with columns below. If I select Display Settings | QBE style | Position | Width which units I have to select for 12 that will this two field match completely?

Where I can read about that units? Which units present for example "ex"?

At the same time I have another Q regarding Alpha5 QBE row: How can I set combo-box control to show values for specific field of QBE field? In MS Access they call that "Filter By Form" and in MS Excel is called "Auto Filter".

12 stands for the number of characters. If you edit a style CSS measurement units are used: http://w3schools.com/cssref/css_units.asp

Frank, what ever I try field size is never for 12 chars. I read that "1 em" should be for 1 M letter at the current font size.
I would like to have both textboxes visually same size and for specified number of chars. How exactly to set that?

What ever I try is some visual approximation and guessing. There has to be some concrete explanation or calculation to define how many letters you want to show in control.

Re: What are default units for web component text fields?

Yes, I did, but now I found out why it didn't work. Few days back I had a Q how to set width of the label. I tried to use property In-line Style. And here I got answer that I had to use Cell in-line Style. So I tried to use the same property also now.

But now I find (I think so ) what's the difference between them:
          • In-Line Style: This property is used for read/write editing controls, like is textbox.
          • Cell in-line Style: This we use for read only controls, like label.
So when you know this answer then you can set QBE textboxes and columns same width and all make sense. Except when I have combobox below there is not complete match. I don't know why. I have to use +1 mm regarding to QBE size.

So with your help Frank, we just make one step forward from Alpha to Omega.

The only Q which is now still open regarding QBE for now is how to create combobox on QBE field. I have for example columns with T/F state (check boxes) or columns with same text in many records and it would be much easier just to pick that from combo then type that again every time. In Ms Access you use for that Edit combobox. So you can pick or write, what ever is more appropriate at the moment.

Not sure what you mean. A screenshot may help.

              I have that in mind:

              WebCompFilterQBE.png

I enabled Query-By-Example row and this additional line show up on top for quick filtering. Regarding that my last two columns can be only True/False I would like to set checkbox-es instead of textbox, so user can just make arrow for true, otherwise is false.
And for fields First and Last name I would like to have edit combobox. So user can quickly select from all available names or write it's own condition if he would like.
