Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Best way to store files in SQL 2008

I love the file upload features of alpha but is it best to store the docs as linked documents or SQl filestream embedded.

    Thanks

Filestream works very good save, secure and fast see it as a record manager for files of almost any type.
You can manage your files in serveral ways very easy. For my purpose I spilt the case into an active db for regular transactions of clients records and placed the files in a second DB for most files are archive type upload once read many.

Final activate stream full textsearch on your document database and you have a superior full indexed document management system in your apps.
By example create a multi db view as example db1.dbo.clients.yourfieldname ->> db2.dbo.docs.yourfieldname.
Create a grid with <yourtable> use the rowexpander of whatever create action button up-download in the second grid and there is your document management system.

The reason I used this the apps to become Hippa [medical] and SAS70 compliant [Sas 70 is to protect your organisation against hosting provider intrusion] and internal IT employees reading confidential materials. Secondly if you store all the docs in a sqlserver blob then you will have a large database [ negative part] if you use sqlexpress by example the limit is 10GB due to the split of transaction records and documents in a seperate DB the document database only stores an interal item and saves the documents encrypted on folder on the server benefit you will not reach the limit of that 10 GB. Further you can backup the database like any other sqlserver DB by regular tools
This is just an example I prefer not to use the express version in production but there are customers with a limited budget this is a good working alternative

    Hope this helps

      Eric,

      Thanks for your reply.

I have played with it over the last couple of days and it is a fantastic tool and so easy to setup with Alpha. I have come to the same conclusions as you.

I use full on SQL 2008 R2 on a VMWare Sphere VM and all is working fantastically well.

      Thanks

Re: Best way to store files in SQL 2008

        1. Did you use the "File Upload" or "File Upload - User Defined" Action Javascript to upload files to SQL Server?
        2. If you used "File Upload - User Defined" did you select the "Allow multiple file upload"?
        3. If you used "File Upload - User Defined" would you post the Xbasic code containing the SQL transaction that uploads the file(s) to SQL Server?

          Chris, Eric -

I've figured out (some) of the Filestream today, but I can't figure out how to use A5 to retrieve a document. Say I want to store some PDFs. I can present a grid with all the PDFs stored in the Filestream system. But then how to deliver the image/pdf back to the user?

          Thanks.

            Hi Steve

Use the action javascript file download feature to access the docs.

I have to say filestream works superbly well. Definitely worth investing time to get to know and understand it.

            Kind regards

Thanks Glen. I've invested much of my day on this and got stuck at that final point. This looks very promising.

                Steve,
There serveral options in the upload component you have to choose that one that add two fields to your table. One of these is the "DOC type. If you select that option A5 will see at the runtime download component what type of document is in the row. There is an autoselect buildin the component what mime type is related to the doc type(row). So please check the file upload component for the right settings.
SQLSERVER2012 has new great options to store documents but the new full text search capacities is really fantastic with A5. To set this up you need learn MS2012 in deep.
In daily practice take attention that the Express version is limited in #Core
