Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Open a dialog Page from a grid

I have a grid in UI Tabbed page. When I click on the Edit Check button, I want to open an a5w page that contains a dialog component. I need to transfer the Transaction number which is on the grid, but hidden to the to the a5w page so the dialog box can do some processing in the "on activate event". How can I get the transaction number as a session variable to the dialog box?

    thanks

    Mike,

In your dialog, in properties about halfway down, there is a arguments property. Insert an argument there and specify to "get value from variable", add a variable name and set it's scope to "session variable".

Then, back in your grid's "Edit Check" button, in the "onClick" javascript event, add an action javascript action to open the a5w page and check the "has variables?" checkbox and enter the variable name and set it's value from the grid.

That variable will now be available to the dialog events as "session.myvarname" (whatever you named it). Keep in mind that variable (name and value) may be visible in the URL and for security reason you may not want that.

Alternatively, you can open a dialog directly from a grid button (select open dialog, instead of a5w page) and pass it any value from the grid (like an ID, etc). You can then refer to it as: e.rtc.args[1].data in the dialog events.

    Hope this helps.

      Dan,
      Thanks for the reply,
Part of my dilemma is getting the session variable set in the grid, referring to your 2nd paragraph where you say "and set it's value from the grid." I haven't got that part right yet.

      Thanks for your help.

Mike, I've added some screen shots showing the steps to get the value from the grid.

Dan thanks for your help. On my computer, the drop down box shown in your first screen print did not work, that turned out to be the real problem. Got new updates installed for a5 and now it appears to work ok. Thanks again.

I take it Mike's situation is based on an SQL table. However, mine is based on a dbf table. I was able to define an argument but things don't match up after that. How does one populate a dialog from a grid based on a dbf table?

                Peter,

Selwyn created a video # D26, "Using Action Javascript to Open a Dialog and Populate it with Data from a Table". Build 3833 or above is required. I have build 3828 and according to Alpha, this is the latest version. Selwyn's video, D25, "Placing Grid Lines on the Dialog Background in Preview Mode to Help Set Control Sizes" requires build 3829. I don't have what's described in the videos so are these builds the ones described in the latest email from Alpha (Richard) on 11/23/11 and I also don't have the property settings described above by Mike. This is Richard's email:

Dear Alpha Five Version 11 beta testers.

Firstly, thanks for all support in getting Version 11 out the door in October

The are some important new and very powerful enhancements which will soon be introduced as part of a no charge in-line update to existing V11 customers.

See the link below or videos.

                http://www.imakenews.com/alphasoftwa...x000558674.cfm

To get the release notes and a link to download the beta of the in-line update, please email me.

                Thanks

Also, video D28, Using a Dialog Component as an Alternate Editing View of a Record in a Grid requires Build 3834. It doesn't make sense> These are the videos Richard is referring to since there is no need to release separate builds. Yet, if one follows the link provided by Richard, you will find videos D25 through D28. Makes no sense to me. What's your take on this?

So you and I both have the latest build. But "soon" they will release a new build supporting the new features.

All v11 videos are here: http://news.alphasoftware.com/v11pre...v11.htm#Dialog

I think you mean Dan? Anyway you have them. but you need to set the field as a "link" type.

My table was a dbf table, not sql. and I'm still having an issue with it. But gotta work on it next week.

It looks like the issue will be cleared up with the release of the next update. However, when Alpha used different build numbers on the videos, it made me wonder if these features ARE the next update or if they had been released and I didn't have them. I based that on the premise that an update would have one build number rather than 3 or more. Add to that, the videos were released a couple of weeks prior to the update announcement. Perhaps I analyze too much in trying to figure things out.

Probably one build added one feature, then another build added another feature...

As you probably have noticed, the downloadable build numbers aren't sequential, they have gaps.
