Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Copy Which Files to Update Web part of an App?

Besides the following files, what other files should be copied in order to copy/paste only the web portion of the app to update another version of the app?

    .A5W, .A5WCMP, .WCP_Settings, .WebPublishHistory

I see no need to copy the entire app when only the web portion needs to be updated.

    Thanks much,

Re: Copy Which Files to Update Web part of an App?

Two ways to publish part of your app to the web server:

    1) Go to Publish and pick Selected Files, then click the little sundial:) in the upper right to put files in reverse date order, puts the most recently modified files at the top, check the files you want to publish and Publish.

    2) If you want to copy files from this machine to the server, you still first need to publish them. So go to Profiles and change FTP Program to "Prompt at Publish Time". Then when you publish (all or partial) it will prompt you with a folder location (Alpha will have pre-published all files to this temporary location). Grab any or all of those files from that folder location and copy them to your server. I do this often because I dont want to publish all of the misc files that Alpha automatically will publish when I request only one file to be published.

The A5W files can be simply copied if you want, but the A5WCMP files must be published as they are re-compiled during the process.

Note - WCP_Settings and .WebPublishHistory are not important, probably not even published.

Re: Copy Which Files to Update Web part of an App?

      Hi Steve,

Thanks for your helpful, detailed reply. I apologize for not describing my situation more clearly. My situation is a bit different in that my app is not on a server at this time but rather A5 Development is on both machines where development on the same app is done on both machines. At this point, I copy the folder which contains my app to a jump drive and transfer it from one machine to another. As a result, I'm continually copying a large portion of the app which really doesn't need to be moved back and forth. All I really need to copy is the

I am utilizing a grid on the desktop where the grid is an XDialog on a form. I should have stated this at the onset. I've searched the videos as well as Wiki and haven't found information on this. The Alpha Five file name list does show the above mentioned files but what about the folders in my application folder? Do any of those need to be copied as well? I appreciate your input.

          Ken

With dbf tables in the web app, I merely zip the entire directory of the database and unzip on the other machine.

Gives me a complete copy of the app and is much easier to do.

            Hey Steve,

Thanks for making me That's where I'm at. Looks like a topic that Alpha needs to answer.

            Al,

That's what I'm doing now but thought there must be a shortcut. I believe this is a situation where Alpha could write a script that can be run at the tic of a check box.

I don't think it's a big enough boulder in the road to worry about.. and I like having a 'safe' copy...

If I did, I'd do an incremental backup(windows or your favorite backup tool) - to get all of the changed files in their various subdirectories.

Then restore that to the other computer......

Kenn, this is the message I get when I try to send you a private message. I do not see an email option.
