Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

I tried David's test under IE 7.0 / windows XP SP 3 and confirmed the new date picker slows IE 7 down. After about 6 trys I get the slow script error. The legacy date picker works fine. I tried legacy about 20 times and everytime the dialog opened in less than 1 second.

My IE 7 box is NOT what I use for A5 development, but I have a lot of customers with our non-A5 desktop app using Windows XP, so I'll be keeping that box around for a while.

Well, I was hoping to report that installing the latest March 10 update would get rid of the slow script errors on a grid with date pickers. I rushed to turn back on my date pickers on a grid and saved the changes, then published.... but, too bad, I still get the slow script error on the 5th click of the edit image I discussed earlier in this thread. David, have you tried it with the latest update?

Thanks, Ahmed sh. But my site is not a public site to which I can give you a link. Again, if I turn off the date pickers, the script errors go away. Alpha indicated that they thought they had found something that was causing this, and it says in their update notes that they took care of that. But it did not help my script errors. I am also not able to use the legacy date picker like David because I am using a V11 CSS style and cannot use the legacy date picker with that.

Ahmed sh, David gave a link to a test he ran about this earlier in this thread. You might try that.

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

              Hi Carol

Here's what I am seeing on my systems regarding the date picker and slow script error

Using that test grid with the 9 date fields using the new date picker generates zero slow script errors on my local machine which is running the newest build 2497-3888. Ran the test 25 times in a row with no problems

I have been working a ton all weekend and the newest build has been fine so I was already planning on updating my production application servers tonight. Just spent the last hour re-running the updates from the primary, alternate and previous version links and cannot get it to install the new build. I keep getting build 2482-3888 which isn't even on the list of previous builds. A bug report has been sent regarding this

From what I have seen in testing, the newest build fixes the slow script problem. The proof in the pudding will be verifying this in production. I'll let you know as soon as the newest build is on my production box. The test grids are still available too

              Dave

I don't have IE8 installed on any of my systems. The best I can do is run IE9 in IE8 emulation mode. Using IE8 emulation mode, I cannot duplicate any problem. I have opened your child Grid over 40 times now and have still not see a 'slow script' problem.

Selwyn under the internet tools then advanced tab then browsing check off Display a notification about every script error. It may trigger it then.

Selwyn, using my grids originally, did you get the slow script message before Alpha found and addressed the issue you mentioned earlier about date pickers? And it was only after the issue was addressed that the slow script message went away? David, the version I installed was 2497-3888. I wonder if I missed doing something to trigger the fix? The release notes said to make a change to the grid and save it, which I did. hmmmm I had some other issues with 2497-3888 and have now rolled back to the January version I'd been sticking with in order to get some work done.

EDIT, I meant to be responding to David and said Chad earlier.

Update - applied build 2506_3890 to my production WAS this morning and verified the fix to the slow script error does indeed correct the problem. Just for clarification since this thread has gotten a little long, this issue was applicable to prior versions of v11 and IE8 only
The test I set up for anyone to try is still in place.... see post # 43 for details

However, I did notice in your component that in the Action Javascript builder that opens the child Grid you have unchecked the default setting for the 'Use cached Grids' property.
I suspect that if you check this property, the problem you are seeing will go away.

As just reported to you in reply to your email, Selwyn, I checked the Use Cached Grid property, and my problem did not go away. I am on build 2506_3890. For anyone interested in boring video of the issue, here is the video I sent Selwyn: http://screencast.com/t/g1gUMqql

I just tried David's test case from my machine and clicked the test link a bunch of times and never got the script error. Not sure what is different, but, again, if I turn off the date pickers on my grid, I do not get the script error.... so, still something to do with date pickers.

I am a little surprised that you say that checking the 'use grid cache' property does not solve the problem.

One of our developers here has an old XP machine with IE8 on it.

He was previously able to duplicate the 'slow script' error that you reported on this machine.

I asked him to repeat the test today with the 'use grid cache' property turned on, and he has reported back that that does solve the problem for him.

Re: Script causing browser to run slowly

OK, I was thinking about what might be different for me. In my real app, the grids are in tabbed ui. So... I just went and told the VendorsReview grid to open the offending grid in a window and not tabbed ui.
Result of opening in a window:
1 - with Use Grid Cache unchecked, I get the slow sript error
2 - with Use Grid Cache checked, I do NOT get the slow script error

I had been wondering why a couple of my grids with date pickers were not giving the slow script error. Now I think it's because they are being opened in a window and not tabbed ui. When you did your fix for dealing with the date pickers, did it have something to do with opening a grid in a window, but not in a tabbed ui? I would like to open that grid in the tabbed ui and not a window.
