Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha 5 Hosting service

Happy New Year to everyone! Hope 2012 is a great year for everyone.

Now on to the business at hand...

I host my own web applications in-house and love it because of the control I have over the server and configurations. I come from vast website hosting experience and knowledge. My first website was hosted in 1994. Founded and sold 2 hosting companies over the years. Sold the last one in 2005. Both which are still in business to this day. With that said, I'm in the process of starting up yet another hosting company and am going to have Alpha server hosting as one of the main plans. My question to you all is as follows:

Would this be welcomed by all and what types of features/configurations would you like to see?
What price point would be attractive? Maybe a base plan up to dedicated plan?

I know there is one or two out there that offer Alpha hosting as a plan, but this would be a bit different. It would specialize in Alpha hosting. Not just another product or service offering. And work closely with the developers and staff (and customers) of Alpha Software to make sure that the features and service and support level are up to par with the level of your applications and expectations.

Let me know. Feel free to post anything. I want to make sure this is YOUR hosting company that you would be happy to call home.

I'm not just another kid starting a hosting company. That is the main reason I'm doing this again. There is just no place with the level of customer service anymore. You can see my credentials by Google'ing "David Fricke Readyhosting". It's amazing how much stuff is still retained by the search engines. :)

    Thanks!
    Dave Fricke

There are a ton of hosts out there, some good, some bad. We currently use 3 different hosts, Inmotion, 1&1 and Zebrahost and we are very satisfied with all of them. Honestly, you could not pull us away from Zebrahost with a team of mules. Clive and his team are top of the line with customer service. I have always been told to make your business successful, look at what your competitors do and do it better, so good luck.

        Alpha 5 Hosting service: prices

        .
        Hi Dave,
This is my guess: for a few of us Alpha Five web developers, we would like to showcase working samples of what we do so that potential clients would be able to judge themselves the type of web applications we can build and the quality of our work. On average, this type of "What I Can Do" website would probably receive few visits per day, say 1 to 5, so that hosting with Zebrahost would be an overkill, in capacity and in price. A reasonable cost-effective offering for this type of service would be wonderful. Benefit for us: low prices. Benefit for you: if our potential client becomes our active client, you'll also probably have a client who'll want to use your hosting.

In the same line as before, clients like to see/touch/use their application even before it's finished. With Alpha Five it is not hard to build the web application so that if it is hosted somewhere (with you!) he can start playing with it. This type of hosting would in most cases need few resources. Once the application is developed, it would be natural for the client to keep on hosting with you in Production, under a different/standard hosting plan.

        Regards,
        Felix

          Re: Alpha 5 Hosting service

Just in case anyone thinks a cheap solution is to have multiple developers publishing to the same server each with a different folder structure. This has inherent problems in that any one of those developers could write an xbasic script that destroyed the other guys websites. For example, if I were allowed to publish to someone else's server, I could write a script to learn the server's folder structure and abscond with every other developers application, including data.

What plan are you on? I've got the dynamic cloud server, and I'm getting pretty poor performance, CPU is spiked around 95 pretty constantly. I've been thinking of switching to a dedicated box.

If you can have your server in europe hetzner has by far the cheapest dedicated servers in germany. I use them and i can run two with ip failover switching for lower price than most comptetitors would run a single server...

Sparticuz, we have a business account which we use to process all the licensing for all our software, and we also have a cloud server with 6 seperate IP addresses. We have not experienced any problems and have been pleased with the performance. If you do change to a dedicated box, let me know how it works out, just in case we ever do have any issues.

I just had a cloud service account set up for my own testing and can comment on performance in about a week.

Well, we have about 20 simul. users (soon to almost double) on the system and we had the lowest (2.3ghz opteron, (single core), 2gb ram, and 100gb hard drive for something like 65/mo) cloud server and it seemed pitifully slow. So last night I ordered a dedicated server (xeon e3-1220, (4 cores at 3.4ghz), 12gb ram, 1tb hard drive) for 109/mo. we've also decided to move our email over to this box as well, so i'm hoping performance will increase.

                      Dear Dave,

You timing is perfect for me. I currently subscribe to another service to host my Alpha sites but that provider has gotten more successfull, it seems, and is less responsive to little guys like me. I have been working with Alpha4 and now Alpha5 for about 20 years, but only in my spare time. I have never gotten past genies into basic, let alone java and ajax. With perseverance and much trial and error, I have gotten a lot of things set up to run on my desk top the way I want. I can convert to web grids, and am making progress with getting those to do more. However, sometimes I get stuck.

I would be interested in a basic service - space on the server for me to publish my stuff - by subscription, backed up with a fee-for-service contact with a real person to work out bugs I cannot by myself.

Let me know what you are putting together!

                        Wow Conrad:

Do you really think this is a fair comment?

What issue have you requested that remains unresolved?

Conrad, I cannot imagine you are referring to Zebrahost. Zebrahost has resolved all of our issues well within our expectations, and we are a very small company. We have always gotten a response within a very short period of time, day or night, weekday or weekend. They have always resolved any problem, even when it was obviously our fault, or ;lack of knowledge, that caused the problem. I have emailed them for help so many times, I start the emails with "Sorry Clive, it's me again", so our experience with their customer service is not an isolated incident or two. We hope our customer service can be as good as Zebrahosts.

Interesting. Coming from a hosting company with over 65,000 customers, you cannot please everyone all the time. Unless you actually only have a hand full of customers. That's just the nature of business. The intention of this thread was not to bash or make anyone look bad or good. It was simply to find out exactly what was wanted and to see if it was even worth my time to do.

                            I guess we'll see...

Any issue I have ever had with Zebra have been dealt with immediately but maybe I haven't needed the hand holding that could be involved with other developers. Big or small Clive has always come through for me at reasonable pricing.
