Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: How to getKey (Primary Key) in XBASIC

    Hi Selwyn,

    thank you for the fix and the video explanation, I can't wait to test it!
    The reason for me generating the JavaScript code in XBASIC rather than setting the state info directly in XBASIC as you suggested is that if I want to do
    Code:
    e._state.keys.alpha._key =1000
    I would have to know what "alpha" is. As I am trying to create an dynamic code I do not know this until runtime, depending on how many rows and columns I have I call the key something like Id_x. "x" being a number I do not know at the point of writing the code. So what I do is generate the JavaScript text where I can add a variable and I do not need to know what this var contains e.g.
    Code:
    "{dialog.Object}.setKey('Id_"+someNumber+"', "+newId+", "+currentRow+");"
    I can retrieve the key easily with a generated text with "eval" like
    Code:
    pId = *if_error(eval("e._state.keys.HID_"+someNumber+"_row"+currentRow+"._key"),0)
    but I have not found a way to set the stateinfo in XBASIC without knowing previously what "someNumber" and "currentRow" is going to be. If you know a way, please let me know it would make my code much cleaner. I would be looking for something similar like the eval() function e.g. setStateInfo("keys.HID_"+someNumber+"_row"+currentRow+"._key", newId).

    If not I will wait for the new patch an just keep generating the JavaScript although this is not a clean way to go.

    Thanks a million for your help once again! without you I would have given up on A5 already.

      Re: How to getKey (Primary Key) in XBASIC

      the pre-release update for today has just been released. however, i am not sure I understand your comment: would have to know what "alpha" is

      if you use the .setKey() javascript method, as shown below, you know "alpha"

      {dialog.object}.setKey('alpha',1000);"

      so, why is the above any easier than this

      e._state.keys.alpha._key = 1000

        Re: How to getKey (Primary Key) in XBASIC

        Hi Selwyn,

        Thank you for the patch. It works now!
        I do not know how to explain diffrently as with the code examples in post #16
        But I'll try again. When I create Javascript within XBASIC I generate TEXT whatever the text may be I can generate on the fly. So in e.g.
        Code:
        For i=1 to 10
           jscmd = jscmd + "{dialog.object}.setKey('alpha"[COLOR="#FF0000"]+i+[/COLOR]"',i);"
        next
        but I can't do
        Code:
        For i=1 to 10
           e._state.keys.alpha[COLOR="#FF0000"]+i+[/COLOR]._key = i
        next
        Do you understand what I mean?

          you can use the eval() function.

          eval("e._state.keys.alpha"+i+"._key") = i

            Now thats great, thank you! I did not know that, I thought eval() was a read Only function. I'll try it out right away. Sometimes it can be so simple. Thank you!

              I reviewed Code Indirection Info in the wiki: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Code+Indirection
              I'm more confused than before, following this thread.

              Why eval() and not EVALUATE_TEMPLATE()? ~ And whilst were on this subject, whats the difference between using either of these vs. A5_EVAL_EXPRESSION()?
              I had read (at least understood/interpreted) elsewhere on this forum, that EVALUATE_TEMPLATE() was the correct function to use...

              Are these all redundant functions?

              It's all about the "framework." (I suppose an "a5-induced" hard drive crash is now in order?)
