Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

When entering a new record, I need to lookup and automatically store add'l fields

I am converting my first desktop app to a web app. One of the capabilities I need to figure out involves looking up and adding data from one existing table to selected fields in the record being entered. The application is one of entering services provided to a client. At the time I enter the date, service and quantity information, I need to automatically populate the service record with selected current values of the client record, such as number of persons in the client household, counts by gender, counts by race, etc, etc. In my desktop app this occurs with VBA code after the user entered data is completed. Can you tell me how I would best go about doing something like this and where I might find an example of the technique?

    Hi Bob -
I'm real new too, but I think video 75 will get you going -
you're basically creating the join and use the "fill in additional fields"

      It's simple.
The filed or fields you update manually ("At the time I enter the date, service and quantity information"), the type of the field must be TEXT -> then you look in the text field's properties until you find LOOKUP (or you click SEARCH PROPERTIES in the up-right cornet and type LOOKUP) -> then select EDIT COMBO LIST -> then hit the LOOKUP DEFINITION -> then select DYNAMIC in the upper section -> it opens a bunch of options, the table you want to look up for information , the displayed information when you click to make a selection (you can select multiple fields to help you decide what you are looking for in the lookup table) -> you should select LOAD DATA METHOD to be AJAX CALLBACK -> and the most important option FILL-IN FIELDS, which will populate the fields in the current table with data in the corresponding fields in the lookup table AUTOMATICALLY (you just have to manually MAP THE CORESPONDENT FIELDS).

      That's basically it.

Re: When entering a new record, I need to lookup and automatically store add'l fields

Thanks for the responses. But I don't want these looked up values to be the result of a user selecting from an item in a list, but rather after I enter several fields, based on the current client (a page variable) I want to automagically lookup in the client table and store data in the record being entered.

        Sorry for not being clear.

        Alts:
1)I guess I could capture these fields when I select the client, using hidden fields in the grid and Ajax to save each to a session variable and then an event (which) after the user enters the manual data to populate these fields into hidden fields in the new grid record.

        2) perhaps initiate an update query to update the newly entered record with data from the client record

You could initiate an ajax callback, get the data from your table, then populate your grid. If it's a SQL table have a look here for the xbasic code to do this - it's a recent post - today

If you need further help initiating the callback and populating the grid, just say.

You could also use Action Javascript, initiated from any field, or button, "Look-up and fill in fields". I'll bet this is exactly the same as writing code... except it's all done for you. Yay!
