Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is it possible that e.dataSubmitted.EntityID is still not yet populated in the onDialogInitialize?

Re: How to populate Unbound controls in a dialog?

That's what I was wondering.... that my lookup is happening BEFORE the entityId pops into place...

I'm trying to create the same functionality via Northwind so I can post it here; that will make it easier for Selwyn to help

        Ok -
the attached 2 components are based on Northwind database and recreate the same situation that I'm trying to implement with my tables

FYI - I'm importing Northwind to SQL, so that I can see and work with the tables
not sure if that will make a difference to the example I prepared last night, but I'm going to build a new connection and try it again.

e.datasubmitted would definitely not exist in the onDialogInitialize.

as the object name suggests, it is created when the dialog is SUBMITTED.

when the onDialogInitialize fires the dialog has not been submitted - it hasn't even been displayed yet.

if you simply put debug(1) in the onDialogInitialize event handler, then run in working preview, the debugger will clearly show that e.datasubmitted does not exists.

this is the whole point of video number D39

the components you have sent are unreadable. did you send them from the webroot, or web project folder? you need to select from the web project folder. to open the folder where they are stored click the folder icon (3rd from right) on the web control panel toolbar.

yes, that's what I was surmising in my post 32

I'll watch video D39 again ... as I wrote earlier, I don't understand it or how it relates to the subject of where I'm supposed to put the code for the SQL_Lookup

                  RE - the components -
I had compressed them out in explorer

rather than take up your time - let me re-watch Video D39 several times and see if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong.

You are suffering here unnecessarily. You just need to put up a simple test case and I will give you an answer. As mention in the prior thread the components you sent were unreadable. Also you sent two components - I thought the question was about a Dialog?

Re: How to populate Unbound controls in a dialog?

LOL - yes, I am definitely suffering more than the situation warrants - I'm sure the answer is trivial. But, I really want to review D39 and try to do it on my own and not take advantage of you -

The question is about opening a dialog from a Grid (which is why I sent 2 components)

                        I'm re-watching Video D39

                        I'm at 2:15

My AfterDialogValidate event already has the ActionScript: ExecuteServerSideAction("Save Data:: Save" - from having watched Video D7

Should I delete that action as it is being superseded by more detailed coding?

it is impossible to answer this question. i don't know what your dialog is doing or is attempting to do.

please post a test case that we can all run.

I'm mixing apples and oranges I think, at cross purposes.

I'm attaching components - at this point, NONE of the functionality works.... (as an FYI - I did import NorthWind into SQL, so I could SEE the data, and adjusted my A5 Connection; not sure how that affected this)

And, my comment in the afterDialogValidate, saying that the ExecuteServerSideAction "works nicely" is no longer true....

opened in Chrome, rather than Working Preview -

and the basic functionality of OpenDialogForEditing existing record is back to working, in Chrome and via Working Preview

Basic functionality of OpenDialogForNewReocrd does not....
