Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Static Data in A5W or html pages. How to make dynamic.

Thank you so much for helping. I spent a couple of days looking for the answer in the help files and videos, and must have just missed it. I am sure one of you will be able to solve my problem in short order and I thank you.

I am trying to create a web component grid using the Google maps feature pack. It works just fine on the desktop. However when i upload it to the server, instead of reading from the Alpha5 database, it reads from static information taken from the database on my desktop. In other words, all the values are hardcoded into the page. It does not look like that (View source) on my desktop. But View source shows the values when it is online. I cannot seem to make it dynamic. In the Grid Layout menu, the grid is Read only. Thinking that was the problem, I tried to make it Updateable, and had to change all the fields to drop downs from text labels, but that did not do any good. The layout kept reverting to Read only. I hope that is not the right place to change things since I don't want the world to update my data, only see it.

What am I doing wrong? Also, I read in the wiki that the data directory should be like this A5Webroot/data/ but not in the same directory as the project - A5Webroot/Maps/Data. Right? I am a little fuzzy on how to state the directory for the data directory. / \ data, A5Webroot\data or /data and so on. Duh.

Are you sure you have a problem? When you View Source, you should in fact see what appear to be static values. This is because the server executes the code in your A5W page and sends the evaluated values to the browser, not code to evaluate values.

Your data directory should be outside of the webroot. If it is anywhere within your webroot, the data can potentially be accessed directly instead of through the application as you have designed it. If there is a specific place in the wiki that this is not clear, please let us know so that we can update it.

Thanks Lenny. Wow, I was completely lost then. Let me try your suggestion and put the data directory oustide and see what happens. I did not save the place where I read what I thought I read in the wiki, but will look for it again. I have looked at so many articles in the past two days. It is also quite possible that I read between the lines too.

Re: Static Data in A5W or html pages. How to make dynamic.

OK, I do have a problem. I did not explain well what I had done. I have published the data to a directory oustide A5webroot (and also tried publishing it inside, which is what i thought i read was a wrong thing to do). But I did not publish to the root directory without a folder. So I went back and published new. Data is in a directory /data. When the project shows up, the .a5w page shows up, the Google map shows up, but the data shown in the dropdowns are not the same as the data in the database. I added a couple of records, which show up fine on my desktop, but when i publish the project, it only shows the data before I added the records. That is why I thought the page was static.

Another problem is that I made special images to use as marker icons and saved them to this project under altrenate views / use current database images. They are not to be found. ANd the project does not appear to search on the map, because the images are missing. There is an .adb file and it uploaded, but does not help. The only icons that show up are for records that do not show up in my search dropdown. So any help on what is wrong will be appreciated. A link follows. Thank you.
