Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printer not working on server

    Got this from the server:

Report did not print. Error reported was:
'Alpha Five Printer' (for creating PDF, RTF and HTML output) is not installed. Re-install Alpha Five Application Server

This is the first time I've put a (SQL) report on this machine. Is this typical? No problem reinstalling, just not sure I believe it.

    Any similar experience out there?

Not sure why the source of the data would matter to Alpha. The report structure is the same. Anyhow I have not tried the opposite (DBF) but I have never seen that message.

      Peter:
Yes, I experienced the exact same issue. A report that used to display nicely before that last patch (2549-3903), throws up the same error message now. I reverted back to 2534-3899 and it works now. Another case of the "fix some, break some."

        Thanks Gaby. Will investigate.

Gaby, I am using 2534-3899. So that's not the answer for me.

Re: Printer not working on server

I am getting this too, with 2549 3903.

I tried another application on the same A5 server that had been working and ran a report and it worked. I then restarted the server and now the report that had just been working now generates this error:

            "404 Not Found

The requested URL /A5SessionFile/Work in Progress_10041214756169.xps was not found on this server."

Any thoughts about what is going on?

p.s. I just re-installed the Server and that made no difference.

Peter, are you running the WAS server as a service?

We found that if it is not running as a service it works. We are currently investigating what permissions are required to get it running as a service without resorting to running it under Administrator.

                Yes, under AlwaysUp.

Bingo! That's it! I stopped it in AlwaysUp and ran it conventionally, and it works! I'll report this to
                  Alpha immediately.

Re: Printer not working on server

My understanding is that if you run Always up, it has to run under the administrative account.
I can't say why this is as I am not an expert on Always up, but I believe my understanding comes from Zebrahost, who are experts in hosting A5 applications.

Re: Printer not working on server

We have been able to resolve this issue with a bit of help from the AlwaysUp support desk.

Issue: running the Alpha Five web application server as a service through AlwaysUp with a non-Administration user account.

It is our understanding, and confirmed by AlwaysUp, that it is best practice to run the service with a non-Administration user, if possible. This is for security reasons. We were able to get this to work by taking the following steps:

                      1. On the Windows server, create a new non-Admin Windows user, for example, "Alpha5Server".

                      2. Give the non-Admin user full permission to the Alpha Five program directories, Webroot, and to the appropriate printers that A5 will need to access.

                      3. Stop any currently running copies of the Alpha Five server (WAS).

                      4. Log in to the Windows server with the newly created, non-Admin user and run the Alpha Five WAS as a normal, non-service (i.e. just run it from the start menu). Make sure your application still runs properly and does not have any of the printing errors that started this forum thread. In our case this worked without any further changes. Stop/Exit this instance of the WAS.

                      5. Log back in to the Windows server normally, launch AlwaysUp, edit the definition of WAS and change the login user to your new non-Admin user.

                      6. Also, still within the AlwaysUp definition of your app service, on the Startup tab, make sure that the "Ensure that the Windows networking components have started" is unchecked.

                      7. Save the changes and restart the WAS. Verify that everything still works.

Steps 2 and 6 possibly may not be required but as we did them in the process of fire-fighting this problem, I have included them here for completeness.

Apparently it is necessary to run any service (whether through AlwaysUp or not) first under the user account that the service will need to run under. For some reason doing so initializes certain permissions that otherwise don't get set.
