Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can auto-suggest be used for TextArea field?

I have been using auto-suggest for textbox field with success. However, once I changed the field to TextArea, Alpha5 complaint that my "lookup definition is incomplete". I double checked all the setting to be the same as I had with TextBox. What else do I need to do? Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

    Edwin,

Why do you want to use a Text Area with auto complete? I think you probably cannot, but if we know more about your goal, there might be something else you can do.

Re: Can auto-suggest be used for TextArea field?

      Wendy,

That is because the text box field is of fixed width (set by 'size'), while the content from the auto-suggest is of unknown size. When the content is larger than the width of the textbox, some content is cut off.
TextArea will wrap the content to the next line and give me the fixed width I wanted.

However, if auto-suggest is not designed to work with TextArea, perhaps there is a way to make the TextBox width 'liquid' to adjust to the content size?

      Thanks!

I believe Wendy is correct. In a text box, you can set not only the length/width (size) of the box but you can also set the number of characters the box will hold. The Text area is not designed for a lookup or auto suggest. It's the web version of a memo field and why would you want a lookup in that type of field? A lookup is for looking up a value, not a long character string. Clarify what it is you would like to accomplish.

          Kenn,

In this particular case, the lookup is acutally a rather lengthly description of an activity, not a value, as such, it can be long, and I don't have that much screen real estate (width) to allocate to it, so I need word wrap. Since textbox cannot word wrap (can it?), I have to settle for TextArea. Auto-suggest actually work quite well for me otherwise.

To word wrap your auto-suggest, just set the Width under Optional Properties in the lookup definition. It will wrap to your width designation, but still drop in the whole, un-wrapped value in the target field.

I would not be trying to do a direct lookup of a very lengthy thing, I'd be adding a field with a title for the paragraph, and doing the lookup on that - with a text box.

Wendy, before I got to your reply, that is exactly what my approach would be and how I've done it all through the years. And, there are ways to show what each lookup value means. So much easier, at least for me.

The problem with a long string of text, as time goes on, what if you have similar strings? Too cumbersome to read the entire text. Additionally, with real estate as an issue, it uses much more real estate than is necessary.

You could use the auto-suggest to find what you are looking for and fill in a field which could be a text box. This way you could keep the actual auto-suggest small but display a decent size lookup and get what you are looking for.

If needed then you could empty the auto-suggest by changing the datasubmitted back to "" or use the datasubmitted.textbox to fill in the datasubmitted auto-suggest.

                  Which ever you need.

Re: Can auto-suggest be used for TextArea field?

Thank you lady and gentlemen for the great suggestions.

In my application, the user is to input a repair activity and my system is to autofill the repair code. The user remembers the activity description, but not the code, thus the desire to auto-suggest the choices for the user to pick. That actually worked quite well other than the length limitation. The repair activity can easily exceed 20 characters but I do know the maximum length since it is drawn from a table. So I can preallocate the textbox width althought word wrap seems so much easier. I will not have a duplication problem Kenn mentioned since the datatable is prebuilt with known activities. However, if in fact I can only use textbox, I can live with that.

It is still a bit puzzling why auto-suggest cannot be used for textarea, and oh BTW, it might be a good idea to gray out the auto-suggest feature if textarea is choosen as the control. Currently the error message is a bit confusing. It say the "auto-suggest definition is incomplete"

BTW, I just reviewed the new feature of auto-suggest/fill in V11 to support multiple entreis, to mimic Gmail receipient field. I found it interesting that the Gmail recepient field fill will expand its height when the contents are bigger than its width (this will be common place for multiple entries in one field). Wondering if that is a special kind of 'textbox' control, if not 'textarea'.

                    Thanks again!
