Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Layout question

I am looking for a way of doing a layout such as:
    Code:
JOB: MY HOUSE JOB: YOUR HOUSE
    VEH: VEH93 VEH: VEH002
    EMPLOYEES: EMPLOYEES:
       SMITH MARTHA
       JOHNSON BEV
       MARCUS TOM

    TODAYS REMINDERS:
        BE SAFE DRIVING!!!

I have the data entry grid configured, etc.

    The table layouts are:

    JOB-ASSIGNMENTS:
    ja_id
    ja_veh varchar
    ja_date date

    EMPLOYEE-ASSIGNMENTS:
    ea_id
    emp_name varchar
    ja_id

Is there any way of doing a display screen (that refreshes every so often automatically) in AlphaFIVE? If so, HOW???? Not sure what type of component to use. Its for a big display of daily assignments that refreshes itself.

    Thank you in advance!

    Re: Layout question

The grid provides a method to refresh at a specified interval check out settings you will need to use free form layout methods to get the desired result.

I cannot seem to find much on free-form layouts... am I missing something? Any idea what direction to look in? I searched through the videos and can't seem to find much.

      thanks!

        Re: Layout question

I was surprised to see this advice that you need freeform layout to take advantage of the auto-refresh feature. I just tested a grid locally, and found it to refresh just fine without the use of freeform layouts.

As for freeform, it's really just your own custom html with the fields in the layout as placeholders. Go to any field's properties for instance, find the Freeform layout option/checkbox, check it, then follow your nose.

          Re: Layout question

Thanks Steve. I figured the free form advice was for field layout ... I figured there was a refresh option built in.

Will the free form layout be at a field level or do I need to do it at some page level? I'm guessing each box is it own table and every 3 or 4 I. Reed to move to another set of rows.

            Re: Layout question

There's not even a "rule of thumb" on this. I'll usually use it when it's a good avenue to getting the layout I need, and that's that. Sometimes it's just a couple fields. You'll also find entire grids of mine where the whole grid is in a single freeform layout. Just be sure to hide the rows that you're putting into the layout otherwise you get 'em both in your layout and in the un-hidden row.

              Re: Layout question

Seems what I'm going to do is simply use XBasic with an A5W page. I do the whole layout that way, and it'll be straightfoward.
              Thank you:)

                Re: Layout question

Yeah, if you know Xbasic well enough to get the HTML you want you can make your pages without the overhead of the grids and dialogs. Simple presentations are easy to create and very fast to render.

                  Re: Layout question

You don't need to use freeform if your grid is columnar (form style). Using containers, breaks and column spans - all built into the grids, you can do it. Actually, Pete Conway has had some good videos showing this. But freeform will work too, of course. As Pete Conway & Steve both said, grids have an option for auto-refresh.

                    Re: Layout question

Clarification: I was not suggesting free form was needed for the auto refresh, the desired result I was referring to was the result of the format desired which was also part of the question.

Thank you everyone. Sorry for the delay, been busy developing lol What I ended up doing was making a simple A5W page, mixed in some Xbasic to open and query the database, and created the tables that way. Was much simpler than trying to get a grid to work. And it was nice because it forced me to learn a little Xbasic. I just purchased A5 on Friday, so I was pretty impressed I got so much done so quickly.

Hey Pete or Pete, can one of you point me to these great videos? I'd love to see what you have been doing with containers and column spans, etc., without having to use free from layout.

                          Thanks,
