Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calc expression in SQL Report

On a grid I can use an AjaxCB to create a sql statement that returns an aggregate amount (expl: select sum(fld) from etc...) from any table. I can't find a way to do the same thing in a report. For expl I want to compute the sum of invoices where state=CA and show it in a control in header or footer of an unrelated report (not based on invoices). Does not seem the expression builder in the report allows me to do so.
    Any suggestion?

Re: Calc expression in SQL Report

I don't think there's a sql_sum() function like there is, say, a sql_lookup() function. So one solution is to build your own user-defined function to return the value you want, then just create a calculated field in the report that is the value returned by that function.

So, in your code tab you might build a function, say INVOICE_TOTAL(State as C)

Then in your report, build a calc field that uses this function:

    calc_invoice_total = Invoice_total(state)

assuming "state" is the fieldname from your reporting table and you want to filter by state.

        How do I do that?

Can't cover all questions here right away, but on one:

Andy Meer and I are on a project, and I see that he did manage a sum in a way that might be done with a calc field.

          Generally:

          Code:
mycalcvalue = sql_get_values("::name::myconn", "Mytable", "some filter here", "sum(qty)")
Your needs and arrangements may and will vary.

Betty - I'm sure there are videos on how to use an AJAX Callback -- I'll encourage you to check for those for a better explanation that I can write here.

Since you are creating a SQL report, I would recommend creating the report over a view or a stored procedure instead of using a table. You can add all the calculations into your view and it will generally be faster than trying to do lookups in Alpha.

If you are not sure how to create views in SQL - give me a shout back.

Most of my reports are complex and they run via stored procedures and views. Many cross tab type of reports with totals and sums. And it works fantastic in Alpha! Very happy with how will it works.

It would much simplify our life if Alpha allowed subqueries in its sql statement.

Agree with Larry and Lee. Views and Stored Procedures enable you to return very complex resultsets back to Alpha. Building the report then becomes much much easier. Well worth investing time into developing skills in this area.

You might think so, but creating complex subqueries inside an Alpha report is more difficult to support in the long run.

If you have a calculation in a view, you can modify that calculation without having to do anything in Alpha.

If you know how to write the query and subquery, turning it into a view is a very simple next step.

Re: Calc expression in SQL Report

That's why I have a slew of views in my backend and even try to stuff as many subqueries and joins in them to make them as reusable as possible in the front end to base my reports on. If Alpha allowed subqueries, I could use the same table again and again and only change the subquery in Alpha in the report.

                        Hi Gaby

You can use subqueries in the report definition and Sql Statements you just have to use Native rather than Portable

                          Hi Andy:
I remember trying your suggestion sometime ago and kept getting errors or something like 'success' and no records returned. Since it worked with you I'll keep trying this option.
                          Thanks for your reply.
