Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

There has been no change in the basic processing of the list of components and pages to prepare them for publishing for quite some time. A few recent changes in the pre-release builds actually reduce the processing time depending on the options selected.

Normally when processing seems to take a long time, it is because some component or page uses SQL and the system is having problems connecting to the database. This could be the query for the actual component, or a query for a dropdown or similar construction.

I am getting the "Fixing publishing history" message AFTER publishing and that takes some time to finish. Can't do anything else till it's done. Pre-release (2636_3914).

The problem comes about when you publish a dialog that has embedded components, it looks like it's checking then re publishing all those components.

Normal publishing has always published all linked or embedded components that are required to exist to run the component. For example, if you publish a tabbedUI that has a dozen grids linked to buttons on the tabbedUI, all of the grids are automatically added to list to be published. If any of those grids open other components the list creation process cascades down through all of the components until all dependent components are included in the publish list.

Publish has always worked like this, but with the advent of constructions such as tabbedUI, page layouts, and features that allow a component to open other components, selecting a single component may result in a long list of other dependent components to be added to the list of files to publish so all elements that are required to run the selected component are included in the publish. If those dependent files are not published, the selected component will not operate correctly.

Some some ago, an option was added to not automatically add support files, such as CSS, JavaScript, and image files to the list to publish. Since these files are unlikely to change, that reduced the size of the publish list and made the process to build the list slightly faster.

The latest release builds have a new option in the Publish dialog that allows you to specify that you only want to publish the selected file and not any of the dependent files. If this option is selected, support files are also NOT automatically added to the publish list. The are a number of special pages that are required for various Ajax actions that are added to the normal publish list. If publish selected is chosen, these files are not added to the list either.

This new option should only be used by experienced developers who are aware of the dangers of not publishing the dependent files and have some process to make sure that have been previously published.

That's great Jerry, and it will be a big help.
