Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Column Spacer Color Problem

I put a column spacer between the First Name & Middle Name fields on my grid, but it creates a light gray square where the empty space should be. (See pic) (Notice the first square just after the yellow Last Name field and the second on just after the First Name field.)

I've tried setting the column spacer's inline style to match the background of the grid, but the color of this square does not change.

I have my labels set show on the left side, and normally they are the same color as this square (although I changed their background so they would blend in with the entire grid), so the squre is acting as if there it is a label for the spacer, although I see no settings for a spacer label.

Has anyone else had this problem? Hopefully I'm just missing the obvious here.

    Hi Rich,

Is your Inline Style HTML? Try doing that and leave out the spacers.

          Re: Column Spacer Color Problem

Sorry Pete, I was away from the office for the past two days and didn't get a chance to test this out.

Once I did, I was not able to solve the problem by changing the width to 0px, in fact nothing happened at all when I did that, but I was able to solve it by eliminating the spacer completely, then making the label of the middle field(s) wider, and then changing the label text from left justified to right justified.

Since I had already set the background of the field label to match the overall background of the grid, it was invisible, and by forcing the field text to the right, the larger field label width put a nice space between the two fields that is adjustable by just changing label width.

I'm still bugged as to why the column spacer wouldn't just solve this problem for me immediately, but since this other method worked, I'm okay with that.

            Re: Column Spacer Color Problem

In addition Pete, I have another (related) question for you:

I placed a javascript button in line with other fields on the grid. No spacer this time, but I'm still getting the gray "box" in between the button and the field to the left of it. Buttons don't have Row Labels so there is no in-line style to adjust, therefore I can't figure out what is causing this gray box.

(You can see the gray box in between the "Persons Search" field and the "Copy Incident Address" button in the screen shot below.)

Any ideas what it is, or how to get rid of it?

              Re: Column Spacer Color Problem

Ahhh, finally found the answer to the "Column Spacer Color" problem, two years later!

Originally I was trying to use the Column Spacer to put some distance between fields when using the Form Columnar style of grid. The Spacer worked, but it always seem to have a Row Label or something similar that had a darker color than the grid background, and I was never able to get rid of it, no matter how many ways I tried.

As it turns out, the answer lies in not using the column spacer all, but instead just "padding" one of the two fields I was trying to put some space between. The padding size is placed in the "Cell Inline Style" area.
