Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

session variable and argument for filter a report

In the report data source query builder I have specified an argument (UserID) as having the value of a session variable (UserID) and built this argument into the query. When I preview the data in the query builder - the results are returned correctly filtered (ie only the UserID results show). The 'Where' statement reads:

    Finance.RTLBID = :UserID

When I preview the report - both in the 'query builder' and in the Control Panel, it prompts me for a UserID value and returns the filtered results. (Presumably it prompts because there isn't currently a session.UserID)

However when I run it on the browser through a Tabbed UI when there should be a session.UserID (there is, because other grid components use it), it still prompts me for a UserID and then returns this error message:

"SQLReporting 9 - Could not create ResultSet from DataSource definition. Unknown error while prompting for argument values"

I am filtering other grid components effectively in the Tabbed UI using the session.variable/argument formula - just not reports.

I know this is a very basic question, but I've spent the better part of two days reading around and can't shed any light on it. Thanks for any help. Malcolm

Ah! Found it! The solution is to define the argument and apply the filter in the properties tab in the Tabbed UI instead! Found that on a video about filtering dropdown lists!

Yes. Part of the learning curve with Alpha is that there appears to be many options and ways of doing things, but oftentimes only a handful will actually work as expected. It is then to figure out which way Team Alpha planned for you to do it.

It would be great if we could ammend the/a relevant Wiki page when we found something like this - and save others some time. This is about the third time I've extended a path the videos have seemed tobe leading me down - only to discoverthe technique only works in some contexts. Still, at least there are several options.

Yep it would be awesome if the Wiki could be updated with lessons learnt and then shared in this forum.

Actually, all it would take say in this example, the Wiki could be updated with a link to the video Malcolm found and an new entry could say this is explained in this video fast forward to time 1:46 to 4:15
Pretty simple. The next logical step forward would be to make the Wiki up datable by this community, so say if in this case Malcolm has found an entry in the wiki lacking (no surprise there folks) but then he finds the answer in a video or on this message board then he could submit an update (for review) to the Wiki and then someone at Alpha could review the submission , edit it etc and update the Wiki how cool (and EASY) would this be? The Wiki would improve in no time at all!
            Richard... Selwyn... Martin... anyone????

That's exactly how I understand Wikipedia works - and why it's so current.
