Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

PDFs into a Web Component Grid

This may seem like a simple questions but I can't figure out how to have a field that links to a PDF that will open in a separate window on the web. I have tried doing a supercontrol on one of my fields in the grid but it only lets me choose one PDF instead of having a dynamic choice. What should I do from here?

    Hi Lindsay,

    Welcome to the Alpha Forum.

My suggestion is to have a page with a grid with a list of all the reports. From here you will allow the user to select from a list with a button beside each tittle. This would then open the selected report.

Re: PDFs into a Web Component Grid

        Thanks for the reply, Keith.

Here is what I'm actually putting together. I have a grid that is connected to a .dbf table in the database. To view information on the grid, I am using a search box so that users can filter which type of articles they want to view. When it pulls up the rows of relevant information based on their search criteria, I will have a button available so they can view the pdf of that article. What I'm trying to do is put in script for that button where it will open a pdf based on the file name that is pointed out in one of the columns. Here's a screen shot of what I have so far.

          Hi Lindsay,

I understand what you are trying to do, at the moment I don't know what you have done, to do it. If the document is referenced in the record then as Frank said, use action javascript in the onclick event.

            Thank, Keith.

My problem is that I'm not very knowledgeable in javascript or xbasic. I have found a few suggestions for scripting to use but it hasn't worked in execution. Do you have any suggestions?

              Hi Lindsay,

Is this a PDF that you have created or a user has uploaded?

Re: PDFs into a Web Component Grid

It's a PDF that we created that is stored on the computer. There will be one PDF per result and we have thousands of PDFs.

                  Hi Lindsay,

You do not need any javascript or xbasic, you just need to use the action javascript in the onclick event and select from the list of Actions, Open PDF document. You will need to use {Article} as the place holder. That is the name of the field which holds the document name.

                    Lindsay,
It's really 1,2,3,4 steps with Alpha, you don't have to know javascript for this. See screenshot pdf.png
                    Give it a try!

Thanks, this helps a lot! However, where do the PDFs need to be hosted?

You can open PDF's on a remote site or on your own site.

Re: PDFs into a Web Component Grid

Frank, how do I tell the database where to find the PDFs that match the file names under the "Article" field? When I click the PDF button it does open a new window but gives me a 404 error code.

Re: PDFs into a Web Component Grid

If you host the PDF's on your website then you could for instance create a folder "PDF" in your webroot. You would then reference the pdf as "PDF/pdfname.pdf" , if the PDF resides on some other webserver then you can reference it with it's url BUT you have to include the http:// prefix e.g. "http://www.faronics.com/assets/DFE_Manual.pdf"
