order of javascript actions

my read only grid has a button which has 2 actions

call xbasic function to set a session.var
open an .a5w page

i also have the set session.var on the javascript row events to set the var when the row is selected.

if i just press the button the session.var is not set, i have to select the row first.

does anyone know how i can ensure the session.var is set when the button is pressed without the ened to click the records row first?

If you do an ajax callback you simply call upon the server to do some stuff and then the next (javascript) action -open the a5w page- is executed even before your ajax callback is finished. If in that page you check for the session var it will not -yet- exist. You could use a javascript timeout to slow down the opening of the a5w page.

You're dealing with the A in AJAX.

As long as you need to make a trip to the server, let that do the complete job. Your situation may vary just a bit, but suppose you're callback function is MyCallback.

Function MyCallback as c (e as p)
   dim session.MyVar as C = "MyValue"
   MyCallback = "location.href='PageNameIWantToCall.A5W';"
end function

This way the session variable is definitely set before the .a5W page gets called.

i am trying to open the page as a new window ans set the window properties, trying this but obviously not right. what do i need to do?

Well, I'll leave you to debug but poking around a bit I found this syntax. Right now I don't have time to experiment:

Your other option is to convert your ajaxcallback to textmode and then wrap code around that.
But steve's way is the appropriate option in 99% of cases.

thanks again for the help, this is what i ended up with and working fine bar firefox wont hide the address bar (i looked at this and i read that firefox doesn't allow it).
