Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

There are several ways to do this. I found using an alias is best for me. Define the alias paths in your profile and place the alias in your grid's image field - see attached...

      Thanks for your reply...
I want to show this image through a5w page. I got it.

      I did like this...
I am storing the images at webroot folder(c:/A5v11/Webroot) in the server where all files are published. I am storing this path in data base table while uploading the image and I am retrieving this path in a5w page and I am taking name of the image from the path, now I am able to show the image on browser.

      Is this correct way?

I don't know if that is the "correct" way exactly, but it is a way. You can do that as long as you understand that any images in the webroot can be seen be anyone who cares to look. The way I described allows you to keep the images in a folder outside the webroot where no one can see unless they are logged in.

Hello Pete, I have a problem placing the path alias into my grid image field properties. The grid I'm using here in Nigeria looks a little different from yours. Please see the attachment and tell me what's wrong. Thank you.

Because I have "Display settings/display format" set to "Image field reference file".

I'm sorry Pete, I've done everything as directed but it's just refuses to work. I've set the path Alias in the image field and even in hosting profile. When I click the image upload button it actually uploads to the correct folder but the grid does not see the image after I refresh. All this on my local system, not even talking of remote server yet. Please see my attached component and tell me whether I'm hallucinating.

Re: How to get path for image in server?

My advice is to use ShortPath in both your upload and display. It's important that you have the same exact path in both your upload and display - something that's easy to forget. In the example in these images I've made an alias for my images, a use of aliases that does work nicely, and allows you to put your images wherever you need to put them. In my case I wanted them in my data folder, not my web folder, so my alias points to an image folder in my data root.

We never succeeded in getting the upload to save an alias in the path, which is why we went with ShortPath - it's simple and it works.

Be very careful about getting things to work on your localhost and proceeding with a system that you think works. We found that, until we switched to this simple ShortPath method, using image upload on localhost would result in a correctly saved path with an alias, but not on our ISP. The difference is that on your localhost your data is likely in a subfolder of your project, and on your ISP your data folder should be outside your web folder. So if you have your images in a folder with your components, it might work fine for you. But if you don't, it won't. The point is to test it in it's final deployment setting before you assume it works and definately before starting to load up a bunch of data. I had to have someone more skilled than I write a script to correct thousands of saved entries. (Thank you Steve Workings).

The key points in these screen shots:

1 - Image Upload folder and Image Path are identical.
                  2 - <ShortPath> for transformation.

This stores only the file name and allows you the full flexibility of aliases. You can put your images anywhere you want, as long as you correctly define your alias.

I do exactly what Wendy does, except my folders on the server and local are different. As long as you define the respective aliases for each in your profile, you should be fine.
