Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Linked report - no data?

Re: Linked report - no data?

I had not. And I decided to let the report run to completion to see the results. The expression I've been using provided no filter at all -- I got thousands of pages.

    So, I've tried arguments:

    SessionData.Animal_ID = :arg_animal_id} AND SessionData.Start_Date = :arg_start_date

Pegged the server for several minutes again, thousands of pages again.

    Edit:
Ta daaaa!!! Got it. Didn't any of you see the extra curly-bracket I left in the filter above? I found it and now all is fast.

Still need to get that 2nd child report showing though.....

Steve, are those arguments on your linked report or on your parent report?

I have a button for the user to call this report. The button uses Action Javascript, show a report. Then in the button's Action Javascript I set all that I need. Hope this picture helps.

Re: Linked report - no data?

Are arguments also defined in your linked reports (the child ones)? I use filters for reports all the time using Action buttons, but in my case I was using CurrentGridFilter() as my filter. And I get a report of the parent records I want, but the linked report is blank. I'm trying to figure out if I have to get the filter to that linked report via arguments or something.

Re: Linked report - no data?

Well, I have one of two child reports working, though I can't seen any difference in what I've done between the two. The one remains entirely missing at print time. For the one I have working:

The SQL datasource is based on a SELECT statement, and has no WHERE clause. There's no additional filtering anywhere else in the report design.

The child records are selected in the definition of the cell in the parent report that links the child report. Picture below to try to help.

Re: Linked report - no data?

a couple of observations about linked reports.

The linked report cannot be wider than the report you are inserting it into for example you can't insert a 100 character wide linked report into an 80 character wide report. Otherwise the linked report does not display, at least for me.

And as Glen said earlier "If you make any changes to the linked report you must refresh the definition in the parent report. "

Carol, the link is the filter. If you want to filter the underlying table of the linked report create a view and use that for the linked report.

Re: Linked report - no data?

I've been playing with this - and although it's 'monkey pushee button' stuff, the linked reports (of genie design) do NOT appear when I select the field names individually, but DO appear when I check the 'all columns' box when defining the data source. This doesn't make any difference to the report appearance of course, because you get another hit at selecting fields to appear later in the process.
Having said that, you have to be accurate - because you only get one chance at defining the data source - because on the second go the report disappears and you have to start again! Hope that helps someone.

Re: Linked report - no data?

This thread got me a lot closer to success, but I don't see how I can filter the child records by a RANGE. The Link Expression and Arguments are is only for simple equality, do not allow functions, <= >=, etc.

Anyone - how do I filter my child reports on date range as report filter parameters?

                    Steve,

Did you get this working? If I use NO filtering, the linked report displays fine. If I do any filtering, like
                    client_id={client->client_id}
then nothing displays for the cell w/ linked report. This happens to be on a dbf table.

                    Bill.

Re: Linked report - no data?

I will have to re-test. I turned in a paid support incident which turned into a bug report. Lots was done by Alpha but no instructions produced and I never really undestood how it worked after all was buttoned up. I know on my most recent attempt I kept throwing filters and arguments at it to see what would stick, and I am not sure what stuck.

Re: Linked report - no data?

Over the last couple years I keep coming back to attempt LT reports due to the prospect of good conversion to Excel/Word. I submit a number of bug reports, and Cian is quick to respond, but I have not yet gotten over the goal line for any significant report. Ultimately I can only invest so much trial and error time before something actually needs to be produced.

One client keeps a copy of v9 just to run a report that must be converted to Word, since Amyuni in v11 does an unacceptable conversion.

                        Bill.
