Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Port 80 Problem

OK. This is my first day working with a5-11. I'm an old foxpro guy. I was able to convert a vfp 9 table back to fox 2.6 and get it in a web project, I have built a grid but when I try to start the application server to do a live preview it says that port 80 is in use. I thought it may be my browser so I closed that but to no avail.

Does anyone know what I need to do?

    Thanks,
    Gary

Gary, many other applications use port 80, browsers do not affect it thought, in my case found that Skype was taking it, look for a server application, not a client.

        Hi
I do not remember, but somebody told me to use 8080, so maybe it will help you.

          Hi Juan,

Go the App Server and change the port to 81 and save then restart the server - works for me

            Re: Port 80 Problem

Andy - yep, that works, but now you have to add :81 after the URL to access the app. So www.mycoola5app.com now becomes www.mycoola5app.com:81

Unless, of course, there is a way to resolve this new URL to the previous one ... prolly is, but I'm not that "up" on those sorts of things :)

            Cheers!

a couple of things - If you look at the bottom of this page you will findlings to threads that are similar to the question asked in the current thread. Using the search feature will also be a huge help in finding your problem

              Check out this link http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...-other-port%29

You really should find out what is running on port 80, although that is not critical for your development system as it is for the server running your Application Server software.

First, thanks for all the replies.
I did the netstat -o and 80 doesn't show up. In fact I have no port numbers less than 1000.

I am excited about A5 being old foxpro and this problem is holding me up (grrrr). I have about an application that I sell to local governments with around 60 forms, 70 tables and a lot of reports, so I've got a little work to go. But, if I get in the "zone" it shouldn't take me that long with A5.

                  Re: Port 80 Problem

Try netstat -aon - look up the PID in the task manager and see what the culprit is.

                  What OS are you running?

                    Bill,

I am running XP3. The "culprit" is inetinfo.exe. It is supposed to be part of MS IIS. Do I even need this running?

Thank you guys, I was just not starting Skype until I had my Alpha server running and Skype would then use 443, but since I reconfigured Skype altogether and it does not even tries port 80 anymore.

Hard to say - if your system uses a webserver for some other piece of software (which many do) you might need it. You can turn it off and see whats affected.

                          Bill,

I turned off IIS and it hasn't affected anything yet. At least now I can do the live previews.

I plan on doing a few forms and a couple of reports to see how everything fits together.
Security is going to play a major part in taking this app to the web but it looks like A5 has
                          a decent handle on that.

                          But, thanks for the help!

Glad to hear it worked out. you may have to reconfigure the IIS service to not start automatically.
