Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Carol, the new patch did not work at all for my needs. The app server hangs several times per hour now. Just an FYI

Re: ***FRUSTRATED***** Application Server Stops working Daily

Hi all, did anyone get anywhere with this problem. I have had the conversion issue error where it would not display the main grid in my database. I managed to get round this by deleting two new records i had created. But worried this may happen again.

Also the application server crashes intermittently sometimes several times a day, sometimes never and sometimes just once. The only way to get around this is to do a complete Server Restart. But this doesnt always do the trick. And a further restart is required. in fact 4 on one occasion. I am running Windows server 2003 and alpha 5 version 11 build 3044-4041. I have tried changing the port but this does not change anything.

I have looked in the event viewer and error logs, and there is absolutely no errors being generated. All that happens is the live database just stops being submitted from my development server and i cannot access it Externally. The local host works fine though.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

              Thank you

Re: ***FRUSTRATED***** Application Server Stops working Daily

                    This sentence concerns me:
'I have looked in the event viewer and error logs, and there is absolutely no errors being generated. All that happens is the live database just stops being submitted from my development server and i cannot access it Externally. The local host works fine though.'

If the localhost is working fine, I would say the issue is possibly your FIREWALL, either internal to the server or your network Router. It is also possible your ISP blocks certain ports or transactions. I have Server 2008 x86 running as a VM. I use AlwaysUP to monitor the A5Application Server. If the server hangs, AlwaysUP! will restart the process.

I have not rebooted the VM or the HOST Server since there were Windows Updates in January.

I would try turning OFF the firewall completely to see if this helps. As long as you have your router only sending certain ports to your server you should be OK, at least for testing.

Rather than looking for an error, look at the Access or Raw log, look for excessive activity. Or look at your RDP port for hacking attempts. I had to install a RDP 3rd party utility to stop thousands of hits on my remote desktop port.

Hello everyone, thank you for your recommendations. I have tried various different scenarios with firewalls etc and come to a complete dead end with everything that way. However as per Steve`s suggestion. Somehow i overlooked this error log the first time. I have looked through the error log now and there is a similar event throughout which is as follows. Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance for all your help.

I hate to keep dragging you through the logs, but now you have to go to the "access" or "xbasic error stack" log and find out what is causing the fatal error. You have to do this by matching up log time, e.g.: "Fri Feb 08 00:44:08 2013" on the other logs. You can ignore the "Connection reset by peer" errors. The ones like "C:\A5Webroot\203.188.201.253:25" are a little odd; why would there be a web request for an ip address and port 25?

                            Hi Steve,

Thank you for taking the time to look into this. I have retrieved the following information. Hope this gives you some indication. It is far worse today in fact i have restarted the server 6 times and i cannot get the database working at all on live only in local host still. :(

I could upload the xbasicerrorstack and access log if it makes it easier?

                            Thanks again

                            Xbasic error log:

I was just reading through this thread because I have a grid that occasionally starts throwing the "Error computing Search Part filter expression" error after doing a search. The only way to make it go away is to stop and restart the Alpha server. I'm sorry to be repetitive after all the posts in this thread, but I just don't understand why the grid with the same search criteria can work for awhile and then give that error only to be refixed by rebooting the Alpha server? Is there some easy to understand reason for this? In all of the above trials, did you figure out why you were getting this error that was posted first in this thread?

I am using Build 3226-4073 and haven't been having any other issues.

                                Hi Carol...

Sadly this still has not been fixed. I've given Selwyn tons of information about my app. Given the dB and the app and they have not been able to reproduce it. I know my consistently happens every 4 hours of data entry. Then it is time to go through the routine of stop, exit, and restart the application server. Right now I'm running V11 Build 3271-4080.
