Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dynamic label

    I know this should be simple, but I can't get it to work. My problem is taht I want the lable on a field to be dynamic , dependant on a radio button selection elswhere on the screen, so if the radiobutton slectio is one, the label on my other field should be 'sold' if the radiobutton it two the label should be 'bought'. But I can't se how to acomplish this, anyone that know how to ??

    Re: Dynamic label

    You could use a js event on the radio button (onClick say) to change the value of the label using logical statements.

    You would do something like this to set the label value:
    $('{Dialog.ComponentName}.LBL.R1.MYFIELDNAME').innerHTML = 'sold';

      Hi Andy,

      Don't really work for me, maybe because of my lack of js knowledge, but I tried as you suggested, please see the attached screendumps, maybe it is becaus I am using a grid instead of a dialog ??.

        Re: Dynamic label

        In the radio's onClick, you would put something like:

        Code:
        myVal = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.V.R1.POSITION.1').checked;

        if (myVal)
        {
        	$('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.LBL.R1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Sold';
        } else {
        	$('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.LBL.R1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Bought';
        }
        Good luck.

          Thanks Andy,

          I am still strugeling, but I know it is because of my very limited JS knowledge, so I will try to find som reading that can help me in that area, I don't realy find anything in the Alpha documentation but, I will just look elsewhere.

            Re: Dynamic label

            Have you tried simply copying the above code and placing it in the onClick (same place shown in your attached images)?
            You may need to tweak the order of the text labels like below, but I think it should work otherwise (no js experience required!):

            Code:
            myVal = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.V.R1.POSITION.1').checked;
            if (myVal)
            {
            	$('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.LBL.R1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Bought';
            } else {
            	$('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.LBL.R1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Sold';
            }
            I am assuming you are using a grid with a detail view.

              A marvelous site (good and no cost) to learn and experiment with javascript is http://www.w3schools.com/ .
              The "try it" option they have is a great place to not only see a working sample, but to kick the tires until
              you're brave enough to try it on your own.

                Andy, correct it is a grid, but using the Form(columnar) option and no detail view, and I did try your code as a cut and paste solution, but it did'nt work, if I look in firebug, I also have to use ...LBL.R-1. and I have also tried that without luck, but thanks anyway.

                Thank for the link Greg I will dwell into that

                  Re: Dynamic label

                  Jim,
                  You only need to view the browser source to see what the input ID's look like. You would have also seen this in Firebug.
                  Therefore, as it is a form grid, your code will look like (note I only had to remove the .D) :

                  Code:
                  myVal = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.V.R1.POSITION.1').checked;
                  if (myVal)
                  {
                  	$('{Grid.ComponentName}.LBL.R1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Bought';
                  } else {
                  	$('{Grid.ComponentName}.LBL.R1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Sold';
                  }

                    Re: Dynamic label

                    Now it almost work, i used your code from the laste reply, but still no change, but I could se in firebug that the reference was R-1 and not R1, so I changed the code to this:
                    myVal = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.LBL.R-1.POSITION.1').checked;
                    if (myVal)
                    {
                    $('{Grid.ComponentName}.LBL.R-1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Bought';
                    } else {
                    $('{Grid.ComponentName}.LBL.R-1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Sold';
                    }
                    and not the label for USDBOUGHT is changed, but only once and only to 'USD Sold', so now I will try to find out why no changes happend when clicking the other choise.

                      Jim,

                      While it will be worthwhile to know how to dynamically change a "label", the way I see it, perhaps you should be considering reworking your database schema to accommodate this result. Because what you are "really" wanting to do here, is change the column name, the field name, in the database table; generally not a good thing

                      Cheers!

                        Re: Dynamic label

                        Existing row elements would have names like .R1, .R5, etc. meaning Row 1, Row 5 etc.
                        New rows get a row number of -1.
                        Thus .R-1 means you are entering a new row.
                        View the HTML source and check to make sure you have a label named '{Grid.ComponentName}.LBL.R-1.POSITION.1'
                        The problem seems to be that myVal is not being set.
                        Try:
                        var myVal = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.V.R1.POSITION.1').checked;
                        alert(myVal);

                          Lyle, I don't disagree with you, but this is due to a new request from then customer on an existing live application, and to start changing the database schema now would be a huge task, and the customer ofcourse only want a five minute fix, because 'how difficult can it be to change a label'.

                          Andy, I will give it a try tomorrow but I am closing down for today now.

                            Ok, now I got it to work, and you were right all the way Andy, this is the code:
                            myVal = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.V.R-1.POSITION.1').checked;
                            if (myVal)
                            {
                            $('{Grid.ComponentName}.LBL.R-1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Bought';
                            } else {
                            $('{Grid.ComponentName}.LBL.R-1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Sold';
                            }
                            I also had a grid with a detail view for updates, and here the code was slightly different, like you showed previouslu Andy, like this:
                            myVal = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.V.R1.POSITION.1').checked;
                            if (myVal)
                            {
                            $('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.LBL.R1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Bought';
                            } else {
                            $('{Grid.ComponentName}.D.LBL.R1.USDBOUGHT').innerHTML = 'USD Sold';
                            }
                            thank for the help
