Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Link Map to DBF?

If you don't mind. I'm going to jump in here, because I need this now, also.

I downloaded Melvin's example. I found the grid, I see the map tab which plot/maps the locations. I made a grid, Tabs on bottom show Layout and HTML. Now Peter said the maps is made easily by Alternate view. OK, but not easy for this fledgling. How do I get this alternate view so I can have a maps tab that plots the locations like the one Melvin made? Some step-by-step would really help me. Thanks.

OK, so I emptied the table in Melvin's example table data_servicer and I added my 180 locations into that table. Then I open the web project and I preview the Grid... and the grid shows Melvin's original data, not the new data. OK, how does one get the actual data in the .dbf to show in the grid? Is it a publishing thing. Does the fact I'm getting a busy Port 80 when I try and open the Application server play into this?

        Hi Mike,

If you are working locally, then you dont need to publish the data. There maybe another program using port 80.

Did you manage to find the Alternate view? It's in Properties.

          Mike,

Take a look at the attached sample grid based upon AlphsSports using a table called cust2.

            Re: Link Map to DBF?

Peter, thanks for the tables. In that, it got me to change the number of rows to view from 5 to 10, which resynched the google map and it got me to think in this line. So I went into the grid based on the table that I emptied and filled with my 180 stores, went to the properties, made number of rows from 10 to 20 and then saved the changes to the grid. This must have then generated a resynch to the table because now the 180 stores I have in the table are viewable through the grid.

I still don't know how to make a basic grid to the one like Melvin and Peter's where there is a tab for Grid View and Map. Which is probably in that Alternate view that Peter referred to and pictured and Keith has said is under the Properties. But I can't see it, I can't find documentation on it. I'm making some progress, but inches.

Is there a way to make the Map in the dialog larger?

            Later:
Note that this thread I see is V11. Is the alternate view a v11 and not v10 feature? I only have desktop v11 and full v10. I can't do anything that has to do with grids and this activity in my desktop only v11.

Yup, i think that's it. It's part of the Wiki What's new in v11. But I am able to use/view the grid and dialog of the alternate view produced in v11 with v10.

Yeah it's v11. No wonder you were confused!

You can make the map any size you want and it doesn't have to be in a tab either. But you need v11 to do all that.

What is wrong with this? Looks OK to me and the map show just the 3 markers.

                    Keith,
Are you working that in v10 or v11. I can't get into the web stuff in v11 because I only have the limited desktop version. The plotting the addresses on the map works fine in v10 but the search and sort of the grid does not.

                      Hi Mike,

If you notice in the top left hand corner of the screen shot, the red Alpha logo, I left this in to confirm it is V10.

What I did notice was that you had set the view to show 180 records, I reduced that to 10. This seemed to make a difference to the search. Also, having the "*" as part of the field value did not help as you could not do a search with this variable.

                        Hi Keith,
Ah, yes, the red alpha. Sorry. But still, 10 rows or 180, doesn't matter, the search does not work in my app. Very frustrating!!! And I haven't the fainest notion on how to troubleshoot this. I'm on v10.5 Build 4369-3712. Looking at your screenshot, you are using the Working Preview. I get an error "Cannot Open internet site a5res://a5wobject/_hidden_varTemp172237906_GridSettings. Searched for that, can't find anything.

                          Hi Mike,

This runs in live preview too. I even added the grid to a page and published locally. Works just fine.

I suggest you start over with a new grid, just in case there is some sort of corruption. It looks like it does not render correctly.

                            Hi Keith,
I have the port 80 issue, as well as the error message about connecting to the a5wreg....., so the only thing I have that works is Preview. The grid will not sort, nor will it let me move to page 2. Only page one, that's it. I can't build a new grid with the google map Alternate view because that is available only with v11 Web and I only have v11 desktop. The example I have is one posted here. The rendering of the 180 locations to the google map alternate view in that example works fine in v10.5, but not the search and not viewing anythung but page 1

I think I'm at a dead end. Thanks for your help.
