Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Are the Microsoft .NET and ASP.Net the same thing?

Now that I've learned Xbasic, Xdialog, MySQL stored procedures, CSS, Fusion Charts, Google Maps and a bit of JavaScript, I'm ready to jump into the .NET that Alpha has been talking about. So, I want to buy a book, but, I don't want to buy the wrong book like I did when I bought the book on Java thinking it was the same as JavaScript.

So, do I buy an ASP.NET book and download the ckeditor and MySQL connectors, or, if not, can someone recommend a book on .NET?

    From w3schoos:

"NET is a framework for developing virtually any type of computer application.
The ASP.NET framework is the part of .NET designed for creating web applications. "

The question is what is the output of Alpha in IIS. Is it asp.net code or is it like now?

It is likely worth trying some of the xbasic .NET framework examples on the a5 wiki initially as most books will be using C# or VB.NET, Wiki Link
As Ken said ASP.NET is specifically for development of dynamic web forms which are similar to alpha5 a5w pages and web components. I do not know if it will be possible to mix ASP.NET pages and alpha5 pages in a single website.

Thanks to both of you. Sounds like a resounding "Maybe". Looks also like ASP.NET would not be a total waste of time, so I'll get an intro book on that.

At some point, when they are ready (V12?) I'm sure Alpha will explain what they are doing.

It could be that Alpha is creating their own .NET language like they created their own JavaScript library, their own css builder and their own way of naming images, so an in depth knowledge might not be much help.....

.NET is a set of MS classes that you can use server-side to do stuff (similar to dll and COM objects).

ASP.NET is NOT useful to you in this case.

I wouldn't waste the money on a book if I were you because you will be able to google your way through it all.

I thing Alpha is building some sort of FastCGI solution. For that they need to have interpreter for xbasic. If this is true then learning asp.net is wast of time. Anyway asp.net is also very widely replaced today with asp.net mvc .

But after year and half waiting for IIS support to come all I still today know is that IIS support is maybe coming some day or is it? Do we run IIS also with developer?
